Rosewood girls put finishing touches on Carolina 1-A crown

Senior Clare Narron led four Rosewood players in double figures with 14 points and the Eagles clinched the Class 1-A Carolina Conference regular-season title with a 61-36 victory over North Duplin.

Courtney Hill and Kasie Braswell each scored 12 points for Rosewood, which improved to 17-3 overall and 9-0 in the conference. With the victory, the Eagles seized the No. 1 for the league tournament, and the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Shanita Monroe added 10.

"We ran into a very good basketball team on an emotional night (Senior Night) for them," said North Duplin coach Danny Blackburn. "We got into a big hole early by committing silly turnovers. But I'm proud of my team. We never gave up and fought hard until the horn sounded.

"That's all a coach can hope for."

Rosewood led 28-15 at halftime, but the Rebels pulled within five in the third quarter. The Eagles put the visitors away with a 21-3 outburst in the final eight minutes of play.

Lauren Blackmore led the Rebels with 17 points, while senior Sierra Ward tallied 13. North Duplin (6-9, 2-7 Carolina) concludes regular-season play at home Friday against Spring Creek.

Rosewood travels to archrival Princeton on Friday.

Chargers fall

in CPIC contest

Sami Schurhammer collected a double-double -- 11 points, 12 rebounds -- in Wayne Country Day's 61-34 loss against Halifax Academy on Tuesday evening.

Ellen Elmore provided seven points for the Chargers (4-16), who finished 1-7 against Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference opposition.

Molly Peacock contributed four points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Saints grab

key ECC 3-A win

WILSON -- Delawn Armwood led three Southern Wayne players in double figures with 21 points and the Saints claimed a share of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference title with a 62-59 victory over Wilson Hunt.

The Saints (19-2) improved to 8-1 in the league and can clinch the title outright at home Thursday against Charles B. Aycock.

Akeem Royal complemented Armwood's effort with 17 points, while Antonio Davis chipped in 10.

Conquerors wrap

up NCCSA 2-A crown

ROCKY MOUNT -- T.J. Sasser tallied 17 points and Faith Christian seized the N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region crown with a 58-31 victory over Falls Road Baptist.

Aaron Sladick added 16 points for the Conquerors, who posted a perfect 10-0 worksheet against region opposition. Jon Spencer provided seven points.

Faith Christian improved to 22-1 overall.

Eagles escape

with OT victory

Stephan McIntyre buried the game-winning shot as time expired in overtime and Rosewood escaped North Duplin 51-49 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

The teams ended regulation tied at 40.

North Duplin grabbed a three-point lead late in overtime. Rosewood senior Kyle Bunn drained his second 3-pointer to forge a 49-49 tie with just under 10 seconds to go. McIntyre drained a 17-footer to give the Eagles (5-17) their third league victory in nine outings.

McIntyre finished with six points, while Holt Rains contributed 12.

Chris Graham and Doug Lloyd led the Rebels with 18 and 10 points, respectively.

Country Day

Adam Wright recorded his fifth triple-double of the season -- 27 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists -- in Wayne Country Day's 80-40 rout of winless Halifax Academy on Tuesday evening.

Tavon Waters provided a double-double -- 23 points, 11 assists -- for the Chargers, who are ranked No. 5 in this week's N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll.

Jeff Franklin added eight points and nine rebounds, while Kyle Pender came off the bench to score nine points. Phillip Weeks played a solid floor game with 10 points, four assists, seven rebounds and two steals.

Wayne Country Day (18-8) climbed to 7-2 against Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A opposition. The Chargers conclude the regular season Friday at defending NCISAA 1-A champion Greenfield.

tops Princeton

PRINCETON -- Ayden-Grifton clinched the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season championship with a 45-33 victory over Princeton on Tuesday evening.

The Chargers (12-7, 9-0) earned the crown outright after North Johnston suffered a road loss at Spring Creek.

Ryan Daughtry emerged Princeton's top scorer with nine points, while Adam Nethercutt contributed eight points. Patrick Bunch tallied seven.

Stefan McGee and Jaquan Nobles tallied 14 and 10, respectively, for Ayden-Grifton.

Princeton (7-16, 1-8 Carolina) concludes regular-season play at home Friday against Rosewood.

Warriors bumped

in opening round

EDEN -- Eastern Wayne emerged victorious in four individual matches, but dropped a 54-18 decision to perennial powerhouse John M. Morehead in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs Tuesday evening.

Sophomore 112-pounder Chris Tesar remained perfect in 51 outings with an 8-1 decision against Chris Stanley. Senior Joey Burridge grabbed career win No. 113 with an 9-5 decision against Zach Brown at 152 pounds.

Travis Turner (189 pounds) collected a second-period fall against Allen Shelton, and Brandon Johnson (215) pinned Micah Stanfield in the third period.

Eastern Wayne concluded the year 22-9.

EPC 2-A victory

LaGRANGE -- Leonard Compton provided a team-high 19 points, including 18 from behind the 3-point line, in Goldsboro's 72-62 loss at North Lenoir on Tuesday afternoon.

Jamison Wellington added 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals for the Cougars. Teammate Tayvon Murchison grabbed nine rebounds and dished out four assists.

Jamal Rouse scored seven points.

Goldsboro (11-8, 5-4 EPC) entertains North Pitt on Friday.

Wayne Country Day moved within one victory of claiming the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference regular-season title with a 51-47 victory over Halifax Academy.

Kameron Byrd led the Chargers, now 10-1 in the CPIC, with 21 points. David Wilson added 12 points.

Wayne Country Day (15-5) concludes regular-season play Friday at Greenfield.

for Rosewood High

Rosewood erupted for 32 third-quarter points and cruised past North Duplin 73-32 in Carolina 1-A Conference play on Tuesday afternoon.

Sean Korman and Brian Jones led the Eagles with 13 points each. Zack Mangum chipped in 11.

Rosewood (8-12, 3-6 Carolina) closes out regular-season play Friday afternoon at archrival Princeton. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Crusaders pick

up road win

ROCKY MOUNT -- Jon Spencer paced a balanced offensive attack with 10 points in Faith Christian's 40-28 victory over Falls Road Baptist on Tuesday afternoon.

Jeremy Sandlin added eight points for the Conquerors, who finished the season 15-3. Taylor Stocks added six points.
