Wayne Country Day's Adam Wright pumped in 35 points -- including a clutch jumper in the waning seconds that put the Chargers up for good in a 69-66 win at home over Kerr-Vance Academy in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play on Friday.

Wright knocked down a jump shot with under 10 seconds left to put WCDS up one at 67-66. After a Kerr-Vance miss, Shadoe Stewart pulled down a rebound for the Chargers and was fouled. Stewart missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but Wright tipped the miss out to teammate Philip Weeks, who calmly made but foul shots to put the home team up by three.

Kerr-Vance missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied the game as WCDS (17-8) improved to 6-2 in conference play heading into Tuesday's game at home against Halifax Academy.

Wright also had 13 rebounds, while Tavon Waters contributed 14 points and eight assists. Jeff Franklin added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Chargers as Weeks notched eight points, four steals and four assists. WCDS coach Chad Wiggins praised the effort of Lamar Carpenter off the bench.

Dustin Thomas and Eric Thomas posted 23 points each for Kerr-Vance.

Cougars claim

OT win on road

FARMVILLE -- Goldsboro sophomore Anthony Artis turned in a career-high 17 points, leading a balanced team effort in a 72-71 win in overtime at Farmville Central.

The Cougars (14-8 overall), who had six players with seven or more points, maintain control of their own destiny in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference with a first-place, 7-1 record. With two games left, Goldsboro is currently two games up on North Lenoir and North Pitt.

Daquan Joyner added 14 points for the Cougars, while Tim Kornegay contributed 10 points. Raheem Lofton posted eight points for Goldsboro as Branden Herring and Burnie Best had seven points each.

"Anthony (Artis) picked up his level of play all week. He hit some big shots down the stretch tonight," Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan said. "Tim and Daquan struggled, but we had some guys pick things up and that's what good teams do. Herring, Best and Lofton gave us a lift offensively. Antonio Green and Joe Houpe played solid defense and got some big rebounds."

Goldsboro, who travels to North Lenoir on Tuesday, won the rebounding battle 49-32, blocked 10 shots and had 10 steals. The Cougars also dished out 18 assists as a team and won the turnover battle 17-10.

ECC road loss

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne freshman Reco McCarter scored 12 points with eight rebounds and five steals in the Warriors' 75-60 loss at Wilson Beddingfield on Friday.

Eastern Wayne (8-13 overall), which scored just eight points in the second quarter, slipped to 1-7 in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play with games left at home against Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday and at Kinston on Thursday. The Bruins (9-12 overall) improved to 3-5 in league play, currently tied for fourth with Aycock.

Landon Downes tallied a team-best 16 points for the Warriors, while Lamar Davis (14 points, five assists) and Floronta Wynn (11 points, eight rebounds) also reached double figures.

Alfred Artis paced Beddingfield with 21 points.

PRINCETON -- Princeton's Ryan Daughtry scored a game-high 17 points as the Bulldogs lost a low-scoring, 41-32 contest to North Johnston on Friday.

Princeton (7-15 overall) dropped to 1-7 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference, while the Panthers (9-6 overall) improved to 7-1 in league play.

Willie Pearce paced North Johnston with 15 points.

The Bulldogs travel to Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday, before finishing the regular season at home on Friday against Rosewood.

CALYPSO -- North Duplin's Terrell Midyette tallied a team-best 13 points as the Rebels fell, 69-55 at home to Ayden-Grifton on Friday at home.

Montreal Garner added 11 points, while Doug Lloyd had 10 for North Duplin (1-13 overall), which fell to 1-7 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference. Conference-leading Ayden-Grifton (11-7, 8-0) was lead by Jaquan Nobles with 25 points.

The Rebels travel to Rosewood on Tuesday and host Spring Creek on Friday.

The loss drops Goldsboro to 10-11 overall and 2-5 in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play. The Lady Jaguars (16-3 overall) improved to 7-1 in league play.

Kim Zullo led Farmville with 18 points, while Megan Zullo chipped in 10 points.

The Lady Cougars travel to North Lenoir on Tuesday, before hosting North Pitt on Friday in their regular-season finale.

Jameson Wellington added 17 points and five rebounds for Goldsboro, while Tavon Murchison had 16 points and three steals and Eric Sinclair had nine points and 12 rebounds.

The Cougars (11-7 overall) improved to 5-3 in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference heading into Tuesday's game at North Lenoir.

WCDS claims

Wayne Country Day's Kameron Byrd scored 17 points in the Chargers' 43-29 victory over Kerr-Vance on Friday at home.

David Wilson added 13 points for WCDS, which improved to 14-5 overall and 9-1 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference.

The Chargers host Halifax Academy on Tuesday.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Wayne Christian's Eric Williams finished the regular season with a double-double in all 18 games -- tallying 10 points and 13 rebounds with four blocks in the Eagles' 37-25 win over Northwood Temple on Friday.

Wayne Christian finished the regular season with a 12-6 overall mark and an 8-2 record in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference. The Eagles will compete in the league tourney, beginning Feb. 13, as the No. 2 seed.

Colton Woods added 12 points and five boards for WCS on Friday.

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne's Darrius Wilder had 17 points in the Warriors' 60-58 win at Wilson Beddingfield on Friday.

Eastern Wayne (14-4 overall) improved to 7-1 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference heading into Tuesday's game at home against Charles B. Aycock.

Darian Cahill (14 points) and Dwight Ulmer (12 points) also reached double figures for the Warriors.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price had six points, eight rebounds and four steals as the Eagles' claimed a 26-9 win over Northwood Temple on Friday.

Hanna Kaler added five points and six boards for Wayne Christian, which improved to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference.

The Eagles completed their regular season and await the beginning of the conference tourney.

LaQuita Holmes paced Goldsboro with 12 points in a 50-22 loss at home to Farmville Central on Friday.

The Lady Cougars (3-15 overall) fell to 0-6 in the Class 2-A Easter Plains Conference with the loss. The Lady Jaguars (9-4 overall) improved to 6-1 in the league.

Middle schools

WCDS boys 42, KVA 17 -- Brandon Davis led the Chargers (11-5, 6-2) with 17 points, while Cameron Ford had 14 points. The Chargers host Halifax Academy on Tuesday.

Grantham boys 39, Spring Creek 36 -- Devondre Johnson led Grantham with 15 points, while John Taylor Graham added 15 points. Anthony Green paced Spring Creek with 17 points. The Bulldogs and the Gators finished the season with identical records at 1-13 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

Goldsboro girls 39, Mount Olive 32 -- Zeara McDuffie tallied 13 points and Lakiyah Campbell chipped in 12 as Goldsboro seized the WCMSAC Division II crown Thursday afternoon. The Cougars, who defeated Grantham on Monday, finished 8-0 in the division and 10-4 overall.
