MOC men top Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Victor Young scored a season-high 21 points and Elton Coffield added 20 points as regionally fourth-ranked Mount Olive defeated Anderson 93-79 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's basketball Saturday at Anderson, S.C. The Trojans used a 13-2 run to break away from a tie game midway through the second half.
Mount Olive (16-4 overall, 10-3 CVAC) led by as many as 11 points in the first half before Anderson (4-16, 2-12) to pull within 43-40 with 2:53 left before halftime. Chris Bartley hit a pair of baskets to extend the lead to seven and the Trojans went into the locker room with a 47-42 lead at the break.
The Trojans built the lead to nine points early in the second half, but Anderson chipped away and John LeSeur's basket with 9:30 remaining tied the game 65-65.
Coffield's basket broke the tie and put Mount Olive ahead to stay and Melvin Creddle's three-pointer capped a run of nine unanswered points and gave the Trojans a 78-67 lead with 4:14 remaining. Tariq Naqqash hit a three for Anderson, but Creddle answered with another three and Mount Olive led by double digits for the final 3:19 of the game.
Bartley scored a season-high 17 points and connected on his only three-point attempt to extend his streak to 10 consecutive games with at least one three-pointer made. The Trojans placed five players in double figures with Creddle and Elijah Rouse adding 10 points apiece.
Rouse and Young each pulled down six rebounds, while Rouse also dished out a game-high six assists. Mount Olive outrebounded Anderson 39-28.
Alfred Boykin led four Anderson players in double figures with 19 points, while LeSeur finished with 17 points.
Mount Olive returns to action Monday as the Trojans play host to nationally eighth-ranked Barton in a CVAC match-up. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Mount Olive was as close as two points early in the second half, but regionally fourth-ranked Anderson used a 17-3 run to pull away and defeat the Trojans 79-54 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's basketball Saturday at Anderson, S.C.
Mount Olive (10-10 overall, 5-8 CVAC) led by as many as five points in the first half and forced six ties before Anderson (17-3, 13-1) pulled out to a 26-18 lead. Mount Olive cut the lead to 34-33 after Teneal Boone hit a basket with 2:03 left in the first half. The Trojans went into halftime trailing 38-33.
Tomeka Prichard's three-pointer with 18:22 left in the game pulled the Trojans within 40-38 and Mount Olive was still down only 44-40 when Anderson went on its game-breaking run. Anderson capped the run with nine unanswered points to take a 61-43 lead with 10:52 remaining. Mount Olive never got any closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Boone led Mount Olive with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Alisa Jones went 7-for-10 from the free throw line and finished with nine points. Prichard has hit a three-pointer in eight consecutive games.
Deidra Langston led four Anderson players in double figures with 21 points.
Mount Olive returns to action Monday as the Trojans play host to Barton in a CVAC match-up. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
