North Duplin boys snap 18-game skid in Carolina 1-A play

PRINCETON -- North Duplin claimed a 63-62, come-from-behind victory over Princeton and snapped an 18-game losing streak against Class 1-A Carolina Conference opposition Tuesday evening.

Ryan Killette drained two free throws with 7.3 seconds remaining to give the Rebels their one-point advantage. The Bulldogs, who led 60-50 with two minutes left in regulation, missed a game-winning shot from the baseline at the buzzer.

Chris Graham emerged North Duplin's top scorer with a game-high 21 points. Doug Lloyd added 11 points and Montreal Garner provided 10.

Ryan Daughtry led four Bulldogs in double figures with 17 points. Will Gainey chipped in 12, while Patrick Bunch and Taylor Lane each tallied 10.

North Duplin (1-12, 1-6 Carolina) entertains Ayden-Grifton on Friday. Princeton (7-14, 1-6) is the guest of county archrival North Johnston.

Conquerors pick

up NCCSA victory

GREENVILLE -- T.J. Sasser and John Spencer combined for eight 3-pointers in Faith Christian's 53-31 victory at Trinity Christian in N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A Region play.

Sasser finished with 15 points and Spencer added 11.

Faith Christian (20-1) entertains Mt. Calvary of Hookerton on Friday.

Saints collect

ECC win in OT

WILSON -- Southern Wayne drained nine of 13 free throws in overtime and turned back Beddingfiel 78-72 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

The Saints' Antonio Davis, who scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds, scored the game-tying basket with six seconds remaining in regulation.

Delawn Armwood posted a double-double -- 28 points, 10 rebounds -- for Southern Wayne. Akeem Royal added 15 points, while Justin Bellamy chipped in 10.

Guard Derek Garris missed the game due to an injury.

"I thought the guys stepped up and played well without Derek," said Saints coach Mike Connelley.

Brian Richardson led four Bruins in double figures with 20 points. Alfred Artis provided 15, while Dustin Murry and Brian McNair each contributed 14.

Southern Wayne (17-2, 6-1 ECC) entertains Kinston in a battle for first place on Friday. Game time is approximately 7:30 p.m.

KINSTON -- Rob Phillips emerged the lone Charles B. Aycock player in double figures with 15 points in a 100-45 loss against Eastern Carolina 3-A rival Kinston.

Backcourt mate Lamada Williams added seven points for the Golden Falcons, who slipped to 6-14 overall and 2-5 in the ECC.

Sophomore Quinton Coples led four Vikings in double figures with 21 points. Curtis Hines scored 16, followed by Donovan Ingram (15) and Miguel Starkey (13).

C.B. Aycock concludes the home portion of its schedule Friday against Wilson Hunt.

Eagles at home

KENLY -- Kyle Bunn buried five 3-pointers and sizzled the nets for 27 points in Rosewood's 53-41 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Johnston.

Stephen McIntyre added eight for the Eagles.

"We didn't have a real good start to the game and I have to give North Johnston's defense credit because they did a good job defending," said Rosewood coach Daniel Mitchell, whose team trailed 10-3 after the first quarter.

"We didn't do a good executing offensively.

Brandon Sanders led the Panthers 16 points and Willie Smith added 14.

WILSON -- Wilson Hunt posted 35 second-half points and cruised past Eastern Wayne 63-41 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

Lamar Davis and Darryl Cowan led Eastern Wayne with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Justin Dunn emerged Hunt's top scorer with 16 points.

Chargers upset

in CPIC action

ROCKY MOUNT -- Garrette Bunch's steal and layup with three seconds remaining lifted Rocky Mount Academy to a 68-66 upset of state-ranked Wayne Country Day on Tuesday evening.

The Chargers, who trailed by 17 points, tied the game before Bunch's game-winning basket.

Adam Wright turned in a double-double -- 33 points, 10 rebounds -- for Wayne Country Day. Tavon Waters added 22 points, while Cameron Strickland contributed nine points and four steals.

Mike Schmitt led the Eagles with a career-high 30 points and 10 rebounds. Bunch finished with 10 points.

Wayne Country Day (16-8) fell to 5-2 against Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference foes.

Spring Creek

falls to A-G

LITTLEFIELD -- Dalreese Bell and Cliff Wilson each tallied 16 points in Spring Creek's 64-52 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference leader Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday evening.

Leon May and Kevin Milton led four Chargers in double figures with 15 points apiece. Jaquan Nobles and James Green collected 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Josh Wright added 11 points for the Gators, who fell to 4-3 in conference play and 8-13 overall.

Ayden-Grifton (10-7) remained unbeaten in seven league outings.

SMITHFIELD -- Wayne Christian's Brooke Norris scored 10 points and added three rebounds and two steals in the Eagles' 50-39 win at Johnston Christian in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play.

Wayne Christian (8-14 overall) improved to 5-6 in league play heading into Friday's game at Northwood Temple.

Katie Daniels added eight points four rebounds and two blocks for the Eagles, while Brittany Sullivan contributed seven points and three rebounds. Hope Wright, Michelle Krug and Logan Dawson added six points each and combined for 17 rebounds.

Rosewood rolls

over N. Johnston

KENLY -- Clare Narron delivered a career-high 28 points and Rosewood moved within one game of clinching the school's first regular-season title in women's basketball since 1940 with a 62-49 victory at North Johnston on Tuesday evening.

The Eagles (14-3) remained perfect in seven Carolina 1-A Conference outings heading into tonight's home, non-conference game against Union.

Courtney Hill and Stephanie Rhodes contributed nine and seven points, respectively, for Rosewood. Hill and Shanita Monroe spent most of the game in foul trouble.

Shanice Williams led the Panthers with 19 points. Teammate Stephanie Norris scored 12.

KINSTON -- Erin Medford drained three of four free throws in the final minute and C.B. Aycock eased past Kinston 49-42 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action Tuesday evening.

The Golden Falcons led 36-21 late in the third quarter, but the Vikings eventually climbed within 43-39 on Cierra Parker's 3-pointer with 1:29 left in regulation.

Medford (10 points) and her Aycock teammates combined to hit six of nine free throws in the closing minute to preserve the road victory.

"That sealed the verdict," said Golden Falcon coach Luke Vail of the steady free throw shooting. "Credit our team that we responded on the road when Kinston pulled within four. You wondered if that was going to be a storybook ending for them."

Chantal Gaines' offensive putback squelched any hopes of a Viking comeback in the final half minute.

Quaneisha Milner led three Golden Falcons in double figures with 15 points. Emily Stewart contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds. Medford also pulled down 12 boards.

"One of the reasons we were able to win the game was Erin and Emily controlled the boards for us," said Vail. "That was a good, solid effort on their account."

LITTLEFIELD -- Without a single player in double figures, Spring Creek squeezed past Ayden-Grifton 42-39 on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Tuesday evening.

Tomeka Pride led the Gators with nine points and four rebounds, and hit the game-clinching basket with nine seconds remaining in regulation. Anna Potter and Barbara Carol Witherington each scored six points.

Sophomore Brittanni Billups added seven points and nine rebounds. Vanity Brooks contributed five points and nine rebounds.

Spring Creek (5-15, 4-3 Carolina) entertain Rosewood on Friday.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Ellen Elmore recorded a double-double -- 16 points, 10 rebounds -- in Wayne Country Day's 56-35 loss at Rocky Mount Academy in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

Elmore also had six blocked shots for the Chargers.

Cade Thorne led the Eagles, who won their first CPIC game of the season, with 20 points.

SMITHFIELD -- Wayne Christian's Eric Williams had 17 points and 15 rebounds -- his 17th consecutive double-double -- as the Eagles defeated Johnston Christian 40-26 on Tuesday.

WCS (11-6 overall) improved to 7-2 in Carolina Chrisian 1-A Confernece play and will travel to Northwood Temple in its regular season finale on Friday.

Brian Alexander added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles, while John Norris tallied five points and five assists.

WILSON -- Dwight Ulmer scored 22 points and pulled down six rebounds in Eastern Wayne's 61-57 victory over Wilson Hunt in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action.

Darian Cahill added 14 points and four rebounds for the visiting Warriors, who are 6-1 in ECC play and 13-4 overall.

Eastern Wayne travels to Wilson Beddingfield on Friday.

Cougars suffer

home defeat

Goldsboro's Jameson Wellington dropped in a team-best 16 points as the Cougars fell 59-53 to Greene Central on Tuesday.

Heading into the game, Goldsboro, Greene Central and North Pitt were in a three-way tie for first place in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference. The Cougars (10-7 overall) are now 4-3 in league play with three games left.

Tavon Murchison added 11 points and five rebounds for Goldsboro, while Leonard Compton contributed 1 points.

The Cougars travel to Farmville Central on Friday.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount Academy handed Wayne Country Day its first loss, 37-24, in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

SMITHFIELD -- Wayne Christian's Charity Wright had eight points, six steals, five rebounds and two blocks in the Eagles' 35-12 win at Johnston Christian on Tuesday.

WCS improved to 15-4 overall and 6-1 in Carolina Christian 1-A Confernece play and will face Northwood Temple on the road on Friday.

Hanna Kaler added eight points, four steals and three rebounds for the Eagles, while Kaitlyn Kosuda contributes even rebounds, two points and two steals. Each WCS player scored on Tuesday.

Middle schools

Dillard boys 30, Spring Creek 21 -- Demetrio Irby and Joshua Dortch each scored 10 points for the Tigers, who claimed Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II title with a perfect 8-0 mark. Dillard (11-2) entertains Greenwood on Thursday.

Rocky Mount Academy boys 51, Wayne Country Day 47 -- Brandon Davis led the visiting Chargers with 28 points. WCDS (10-5) fell to 5-2 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference.
