Cougars throw 'block' party at Tarboro's expense

TARBORO -- Goldsboro High 6-foot-6 junior Daquan Joyner flirted with a triple-double on Friday, scoring 18 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking eight shots in the Cougars' 77-66 win at Tarboro in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference action.

Goldsboro (11-8, 4-1), which has won five of its last six games, finished with 14 total blocked shots with Joe Houpe blocking six and Tim Hobbs swatting away four shots. Houpe also had 10 rebounds, while Hobbs had five boards in a game that saw the Cougars dominate the glass, 51-29. The Cougars also won the turnover battle 27-12 and dished out 23 assists in a solid team effort.

Junior Tim Kornegay paced the Cougars' scoring with 20 points, while Houpe added eight points.

Goldsboro led 47-18 after a dominant first half, before the Vikings stepped up to outscore the Cougars 48-30 after intermission.

"Everything we did worked in the first half. Our defense was outstanding, and we scored in transition," Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan said. "The second half was tougher, but credit Tarboro because they didn't quit. Our kids executed and we went deep on our bench, which will hopefully help us down the stretch in conference."

The Vikings (4-15, 1-5) were led by Jontae Sherrod, who dropped in 28 points.

The Cougars, who lead the EPC, start a three-game week with a home contest Monday against Farmville Central.

CBA wins second straight

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Lamada Williams dropped in a team-best 17 points as the Golden Falcons defeated Wilson Beddingfield 64-58 at home on Friday in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

The win was Aycock's second in a row as it improved to 6-13 overall and 2-4 in the league -- good for a fourth-place tie with Beddingfield (8-11 overall), which fell to 2-4 in the ECC.

After leading by 11 at halftime, the Golden Falcons saw the Bruins storm back to outscore them 23-9 in the third period. Beddingfield led by as much as eight with just under three minutes left, before the home team rallied from behind to claim the conference contest.

"Our time of possession was a lot longer. We were more patient on the offensive end. We got good looks and were able to knock them down," Aycock coach David West said.

Tim Alston added a career-high 15 points and six rebounds for the Golden Falcons, while Santavin Poole chipped in 14 points. Rob Phillips contributed nine points, five assists and four steals for Aycock, which travels to Kinston on Tuesday.

Dustin Murray led the Bruins with 19 points.

Chargers drop Patriots

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Country Day's Adam Wright and Tavon Waters tallied double-doubles in the Chargers' 58-36 victory at Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Friday in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference action.

WCDS (17-7) improved to 5-1 in the CPIC, heading into Tuesday's game at Rocky Mount Academy.

Wright finished with 29 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, while Waters contributed 12 points and 11 assists.

Chargers' coach Chad Wiggins complemented the defensive play of Cameron Strickland.

Conquerors now 18-1

Faith Christian's Josh Brannan notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Conquerors handed Gateway (Va.) Christian a 62-41 loss at home on Friday.

The win improves Faith to 18-1 overall, heading into Monday's game at Bethel Christian in Kinston.

Aaron Sladick added 14 points for the Conquerors, while T.J. Sasser chipped in 13 points.

Faith held Gateway to just 20 points at the half as the visitors had only 26 points after three quarters.

Rosewood falls at home

Rosewood's Kyle Bunn continued his solid scoring efforts with 17 points, but Ayden-Grifton emerged with a 74-57 victory at the Eagles' gymnasium on Friday.

Clarence Toran added 12 points for Rosewood (4-14 overall), which slipped to 2-4 in the Carolina 1-A Conference. The Chargers (9-7 overall) remained unbeaten in six league outings.

Jaquan Nobles and Tanner Carnes contributed 18 points each for Ayden-Grifton, who led 34-20 at halftime.

"We turned the ball over too much, and let them go on a couple of runs," Eagles' coach Daniel Mitchell said.

The Eagles return to conference action on Tuesday at North Johnston.

Panthers shut down Rebels

KENLY -- North Duplin's Ryan Killette emerged the lone player on his team in double figures with 11 points as North Johnston defeated the Rebels 62-41 on Friday night in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

North Duplin, who didn't score in the first quarter, fell to 0-12 overall and 0-6 in league play. The Panthers (7-6 overall) improved to 5-1 in the conference.

Willie Smith paced North Johnston with 15 points, while teammate Brandon Sanders added 12 points.

The Rebels travel to Princeton on Tuesday, while the Panthers host Rosewood.

RHS cruises past A-G

Rosewood's Courtney Hill and Clare Narron scored 17 points each to help guide the Eagles to a 65-34 win at home over Ayden-Grifton in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play on Friday.

The win improved Rosewood (13-3 overall) to 6-0 in conference play. The Chargers slipped to 0-16 overall and 0-6 in the league.

Kasey Grey chipped in 11 points for the Eagles, who led 30-14 at halftime and 47-21 after three quarters.

Rosewood travels to North Johnston on Tuesday to face the Panthers (5-1 Carolina), who's only conference loss came against the Eagles.

CBA battles in ECC loss

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Quaneisha Milner pumped in 18 points and drained four 3-pointers in the Golden Falcons' 59-43 loss at home to undefeated Wilson Beddingfield.

The Bruins (18-0, 6-0 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference), ranked fifth in the NCpreps.com poll, were held to their lowest point total of the season. Aycock (12-7, 4-2) trailed by just two at halftime and remained within striking distance until midway through the fourth.

"Eventually fatigue set in on us. We didn't shoot it as well as we did in the first half," Aycock coach Luke Vail said. "We contained them, but they eventually hurt us inside with their size in the last half. Overall, we played well."

Chantel Gaines added six points and 12 rebounds for the Falcons, while Erin Medford scored seven points.

Jean Best (22 points) and October Harris (21 points), both six-footers, combined to score 73 percent of Beddingfield's points.

Aycock travels to Kinston on Tuesday.

Vikings edge Goldsboro

TARBORO -- Goldsboro's Chevoya Jackson scored 24 points and dished out six assists as Goldsboro suffered a hard-fought, 50-46 loss at Tarboro on Friday.

The Lady Vikings (13-6 overall) improved to 6-0 in Eastern 2-A Plains Conference action. The Lady Cougars (9-9 overall) dropped to 1-4, but coach Gladys McClary was pleased with how her team battled against the top team in the league.

"I'm impressed with our overall effort. More players are contributing, and we need that down the stretch," she said. "We played good defense, but now we've got to put the offense and defense together."

Golsdboro trailed 29-20 at halftime, then battled back to cut it to 39-36 heading into the fourth quarter before Tarboro held on for the win.

The Cougars host Farmville Central on Monday and Greene Central on Tuesday.

EW improves to 5-1 in ECC

Eastern Wayne's Darrius Wilder scored 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the Warriors' 77-57 win over Southern Wayne on Friday.

Eastern Wayne (12-4 overall) improved to 5-1 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference, heading into Tuesday's game at Wilson Hunt.

Daviyon Whisonant added 15 points and six assists for the Warriors, while Dwight Ulmer (13 points, five rebounds) and Darian Cahill (13 points, four rebounds) also reached double figures.

Emmanuel Hinton paced the Saints with 15 points as Silonte Thompson and Justin Mitchell had 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Saints travel to Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday.

Falcons grab 2nd ECC win

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Kelton Lewis and Jonathan Williams scored 13 points each for the Golden Falcons, who claimed a 47-44 win at home over Wilson Beddingfield on Friday.

Aycock improved to 2-3 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play, heading into Tuesday's game at Kinston.

Jacob Pendleton added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Falcons.

Jamal Artis paced Beddingfield with 10 points.

Faith claims home win

Faith Christian's Jeremy Sandlin tallied 14 points in the Conquerors' 39-28 win at home over Gateway (Va.) Christian.

Faith improved to 11-3 overall with the victory and travels to Bethel Christian in Kinston on Monday.

GHS falls on road

TARBORO -- Goldsboro's Kevonta McDuffie turned in a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Cougars suffered a tough, 55-51 loss at Tarboro on Friday.

The game stood tied at 51-51 with 20 seconds left, before a technical foul was called on Goldsboro, which turned the momentum in the Vikings' favor according to Cougars' coach Rod Ford.

Jameson Wellington added 12 points for Goldsboro (9-6, 3-2 Eastern Plains 2-A Conference), while Leonard Compton contributed nine points.

The Cougars host Farmville Central on Monday.

A-G tops Rosewood

Rosewood's Taylor Allen scored nine points in a 44-34 loss at home to Ayden-Grifon on Friday.

The loss drops the Eagles (6-10 overall) to 2-4 in the Carolina 1-A Conference.

Matt Daughtry led the Chargers with 13 points.

Rosewood travels to Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

Goldsboro's Tiffany Pearsall and ShaMeka Brinson tallied six points in the Lady Cougars' 28-21 loss at home to Tarboro on Friday.

Goldsboro (2-13 overall) fell to 0-4 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference, while the Lady Vikings (10-2 overall) improved to 5-1 in the EPC.

In the Boys 10-under division, Wayne County's Dylan Cuddington finished 2005 ranked 15th in the state, while Chaz Fitzpatrick is ranked 82nd.

Bennett nabs three events

Rosewood High's Devon Bennett prevailed in three individual events, but North Johnston emerged the team champion during the Class 1-A Carolina Conference indoor track and field championship meet.

Bennett captured the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.65 seconds, and took the 300 with a time of 38.81. He also posted the top distance of 37 feet, 41/2 inches in the triple jump. Bennett helped the Eagles collect 46 points and finish second overall in the four-team meet.

Teammate Matthew Lassiter seized the shot put individual title with a throw of 36-9 -- more than half a foot better than teammate Chris Dunham, who recorded a distance of 36-21/2.

Santorio James grabbed second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:48.

North Johnston amassed 127 points. Spring Creek was third with 32 points, while Princeton tallied 10.
