Boone scores 1,000th point in loss

MOUNT OLIVE -- Teneal Boone scored her 1,000th career point and Meaghan Vanderhorst scored a career-high 22 points for Mount Olive, but it wasn't enough as the Trojans fell to Limestone 82-72 in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's basketball game Saturday at Kornegay Arena.

Melissa DeVore recorded a triple-double for Limestone with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to help the Saints rally from an early 16-point deficit.

Attendance was a Kornegay Arena record crowd of 1,276 for Mount Olive's 23rd annual Basketball Church Night.

Mount Olive (10-8 overall, 5-6 CVAC) scored the first six points of the game and built the lead to 22-6 with 12:44 left in the first half. Vanderhorst and Tomeka Prichard hit two three-pointers apiece during the Trojans' opening scoring run. Limestone (7-11, 4-7) rallied to pull within 28-23 with 5:51 after DeVore's entry pass found Monica Adams open underneath the basket for an uncontested lay-in.

Prichard and Vanderhorst each connected on three-pointers as Mount Olive built the lead up to 12, but Devore's four-point play with 49 seconds remaining pulled Limestone within 38-34. Sierra Medeiros hit a jumper for Mount Olive and the Trojans led 40-35 at halftime.

Boone and Alisa Jones both hit layups in the first minute of the second half and the Trojans built a 48-39 lead with 17:39 left in the game. But DeVore and Danielle Viera each hit a three-pointer and Adams' layup with 15:44 remaining capped a 10-0 run and gave Limestone its first lead at 49-48. Mount Olive regained the lead on Anita Rogers' three-pointer, but Jodeana Pirtle hit a three to put Limestone back on top.

After Limestone extended the lead to three, Vanderhorst hit a three-pointer with 10:08 remaining to tie the game 57-57. But Tiffany Jones' basket put Limestone ahead to stay and another three by Pirtle highlighted a 9-1 run to give the Saints a 66-58 lead. Limestone built the lead to nine points before baskets by Boone and Vanderhorst pulled the Trojans within 73-68 with 3:16 left in the game. Boone's bucket put her at the 1,000-point mark.

The Trojans had two chances to cut the lead to three, but a missed basket and a turnover on their next two turnovers kept the margin at five and Mount Olive never got any closer. Limestone hit 7-of-8 free throws to seal the win.

Boone finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for Mount Olive, while Prichard scored all of her 11 points in the first half. Anita Rogers dished out six assists, while Vanderhorst and Keona Corley each had five assists.

Adams finished with 17 points off the bench for Limestone, while Viera added 15 points for Limestone, while Pirtle added 11 points and Jones finished with 10 points. DeVore has reached double figures in assists in each of her last two games after an 11-assist performance Monday at Anderson.

Mount Olive returns to action Monday as the Trojans travel to Laurinburg to face St. Andrews in a CVAC contest. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. Limestone plays host to Erskine (S.C.) College on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in CVAC action.
