WARSAW -- Eastern Wayne's Landon Downes finished with 18 points, six rebounds and six assists and led six Warriors in double figures in a 82-49 win over James Kenan on Wednesday in non-conference play.

Eastern Wayne improved to 8-8 overall and will take a 1-2 mark in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play into Friday's home game against Kinston, which is ranked No. 4 in the latest Class 3-A ncpreps.com poll.

"I think this is better for us than a practice at this point ... playing this game, having to go there after a few days off from school," Eastern Wayne boys coach Marvin Bowman said. "I think it was a good tune-up before we play a team like Kinston."

D'Adrian Worrell added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Warriors, while Darryl Cowan and Floronta Wynn provided 12 points each. Lamar Davis and Reco McCarter chipped in 10 points apiece. Cowan and Davis also dished out four assists each.

Eastern Wayne held the Tigers to only six points in both the first and third quarters, and outscored the home team 51-26 in the second half.

"We moved the ball well, and hit the boards better. I thought the effort on the boards was excellent," Bowman said. "I was pleased with our efforts last night defensively."

Derek Pemberton finished with 10 points last night to lead Kenan, which hosts Pender today.

Eagles claim

5th straight win

Katie Daniels tallied 14 points in Wayne Christian's 41-26, non-conference victory over county rival Wayne Country Day at Clifford Gymnasium.

Michelle Krug provided eight points, six rebounds, five steals and two assists for the Eagles. Hope Wright pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with six points and three blocked shots.

Wayne Christian, which claimed its fifth consecutive win, carries a 7-11 worksheet into Friday's game at Village Christian.

EW suffers

road loss in OT

WARSAW -- Eastern Wayne's Yasmine Washington scored 25 points in the Lady Warriors' 59-57 loss in overtime at James Kenan on Wednesday.

Noelle Kelly and Sherelle Burt added nine points each for Eastern Wayne (1-15).

Tiffany Wilson led the Tigers with 18 points, while Selise Crawford chipped in 12 points and Etelka Vann added 10 points.

The Lady Warriors return to action at home on Friday against Kinstin in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play.

claim wins

Eastern Wayne's boys and girls swim teams claimed wins in a four-team meet at the Goldsboro YMCA on Tuesday.

The Warrior boys, led by Mason Chenier, Melvon Shippman and Xander Robinson, finished with 94 team points, while Roanoke Rapids (72) and Southern Wayne (65) finished second and third, respectively. Charles B. Aycock (32) took fourth.

Chenier finished first in the 50 freestyle (23.62) and the 100 butterfly (59.65) as Shippmon had first-place times in the 100 backstroke (1:04.94) and 200 freestyle (2:11.17). Robinson won the 200 individual medley (2:22.39) and 500 freestyle (5:27.44). The trio, along with Sam Fornecker, helped Eastern Wayne also took first in the 200 and 400 medley relays.

In the girls meet, Eastern Wayne's Rachael Stoneburner and Ashley Robinson claimed two first-place finishes each as the Warriors had 85 team points. Roanoke Rapids (77) claimed second, while Aycock (49) and Southern Wayne (45) rounded out the team scoring.

Rachael Stoneburner won the 100 freestyle (1:01.41) and the 200 individual medley (2:38.42), while Robinson took the 200 freestyle (2:15.61) and 500 freestyle (5:59.24). The Warriors also took the 200 medley relay as Rachael Stoneburner, Meike Meischner, Ashley Robinson and Melisa Reicker teamed to win the event. Regan Stoneburner, Meike Meischner, Robinson and Rachael Stoneburner emerged with a win in the 400 freestyle relay.

Hawgs Breath

Bass Club

The Hawgs Breath Bass Club held its monthly tournament at Tar River Reservoir on the Jan. 14, and Ray Burrell continued his string of cold weather victories. Bill Thompson teamed up with Oscar Johnson to take second, which included Thompson's big catch of 5.18 pounds. Third place went to Joe Moye and Curtis Mozingo. Next month's tournament will be held Feb. 18 on the Neuse-Trent Rivers.
