SNOW HILL -- Tim Kornegay poured in a game-high 29 points as Goldsboro stormed back in the fourth quarter to defeat Greene Central 71-59 Friday night before a large crowd at the Rams gymnasium.
Trailing 47-43 heading into the final frame, the Cougars dominated the final eight minutes by outscoring the home team 28-12 points in a fast-paced period.
"It was a game of two halves," Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan said. "This is a good win for us -- this is a hard place to play."
Daquan Joyner, who was riddled by early foul trouble, added 12 points for the Cougars, who improved to 9-7 overall with the win and are now a perfect 2-0 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play.
Reggie Johnson and Charlie Gamble led the Rams (9-5, 0-3) in scoring with 19 and 16 points, respectively.
Greene Central led by three after an evenly played first quarter. Joyner, the Cougars' big man, went to the bench with two fouls late in the first period and the Rams began to convert easy baskets in the post in the second quarter to stretch their lead to six at the half.
The Cougars made defensive adjustments in the third quarter and gained momentum late in the stanza and trailed by just four heading into the final quarter.
"We changed up defensively in the second half," Jordan said. "The first half we played man to man and the second half we full court pressed and played half court man."
When Joyner went to the bench in the first half, freshman Tim Hobbs gave the Cougars some quality minutes. He scored a pair of baskets and prevented the Rams from opening up a big lead.
Johnson drilled five treys in the game for Greene Central -- including three in the first half.
"I feel like our kids played really hard," Greene Central head coach Robert Browning said. "We played as well as we can for three quarters. Goldsboro is a really good team and they got the lead and we had to play their game. They did what they needed to do."
Goldsboro finally tied the game on a pair of free throws by Treme Boone with less than six minutes left in the game. The Cougars surged ahead on a 3-point basket by Joyner and never looked back.
Boone, Burnie Best and Brandon Herring led the Cougars ball-hawking defensive effort in the second half.
In the girls game, the Lady Rams wore the Cougars down with their superior size and rolled to a 44-34 victory. Goldsboro actually led 10-8 after one quarter of play as the Cougar's Daniel Irby scored five points in the opening period.
Greene Central outscored Goldsboro 18-7 in the second quarter to grab a nine-point lead at halftime. Goldsboro was able to match the Rams basket for basket in the second half, but could not get closer than 10 in the final period.
"We really worked hard this week on stepping up our play and having the girls learn their roles on the team," Greene Central head girls coach B.J. Bass said. "I think our size helped, but they are a scrappy team. One of the things we are really disappointed in is our rebounding. That is something we are really going to focus on"
Rams junior guard Briana Stanton, who already has interest from Division I schools, scored 19 points, controlling the game inside and out for Greene Central.
The Rams extended their lead to 42-26 halfway through the fourth quarter, but the Cougars scored the next six points and battled Greene Central to the wire.
"I commend my team for a really good effort, we were getting good looks at the basket but our shots were not falling," Goldsboro coach Gladys McClary said. "When your shots don't fall, you have to continue to play."
Goldsboro was led in scoring by Angel Roberts and Chevoya Jackson with 10 points each.
