Warriors fall to Hunt

The Eastern Wayne boy's basketball team could not survive a sub-par third quarter and suffered a 66-61 loss to Wilson Hunt in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play Monday night. The Warriors attempted only eight shots and committed seven turnovers and were outscored 18-6 by Hunt in the third period.

"I don't know if it was anything they did, but they did press us a little more in the third quarter. We made a couple of turnovers, failed to fill the lanes, and didn't get those shots," Eastern Wayne boys coach Marvin Bowman said. "We kind of dropped our heads and did not see our outlets, and they were there, too."

Reco McCarter began the game for Eastern Wayne with a breakaway dunk as both teams shot well early. The Warrior boys jumped to a 20-17 after one period of play behind a balanced scoring attack. Six Eastern Wayne players scored in the first quarter. Anthony Lewis scored nine points for Hunt in the opening quarter, allowing his team to stay close.

Hunt finally pulled ahead 21-20 in the second quarter on a basket by Lavelle Shipman with 6:25 left in the opening half. Eastern Wayne surged back into the lead on a steal and a lay-up by Lamar Davis. The home team led Hunt by three at intermission.

Quentin Stackhouse opened the third quarter with three baskets off turnovers as Hunt took control of the game. The visitors started working the ball inside and getting easy baskets to take a nine-point lead after three quarters.

"They had an edge in rebounding" said Bowman. "They drove to the basket and got their own rebounds. They did a good job of moving the ball and getting the shots they wanted."

The Warriors tried to shoot their way back into the game in the fourth period as Eastern Wayne began making 3-point shots in the fourth quarter. Davis had three, and Daryl Cowan drilled two from the corner.

The Warriors were able to slice a 10-point deficit to five in the waning moments of the game.

"I did see some good things in the game, hopefully a lot of these lessons we will take to heart in the future." said Bowman.

Eastern Wayne's leading scorers were Davis with 13 and Cowan with 11. Hunt's leading scorer was Anthony Lewis with 19.

In the girls game, the Lady Warriors stayed close early but Hunt used their height advantage to wear down Eastern Wayne and capture a 53-34 victory.

The Warriors' Yasmine Washington continued her solid play with a game-high 18 points. Eastern Wayne trailed only by four after one quarter of play but the margin grew to double digits in the second period.

Hunt's Brandi Williams was a force inside scoring all 10 of her baskets in the paint. The 6-foot-2 center also dominated the offensive and defensive boards -- giving her team numerous second chances after misses.

Eastern Wayne handled Wilson Hunt's press well in the first half but committed 16 turnovers in the second half to fall behind by 20 points.

Noelle Kelly also was in double figures for the Warriors, scoring 11 points. Hunt was led by Chelsea Atkinson with 11 points.

"We are disappointed with the loss. My girls played hard, but we did not do a good job handling their press," Eastern Wayne coach Brent Holland said. "We did not do well on the boards. They had too many put-backs. We are executing what I am teaching, but we are just not making shots."

The Eastern Wayne teams will host Wilson Beddingfield Friday night in another ECC matchup.
