CBA girls, Kinston boys claim wins

PIKEVILLE -- Lamada Williams scored 15 second-half points to rally the Golden Falcons, but it wasn't enough as visiting Kinston pulled away Monday night 67-47.

Rob Phillips added a team-high 17 points for Aycock, which fell to 4-11 overall and 0-2 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference.

Bo Ingram tallied a game-high 25 points for Kinston, which improved to 2-0 in conference play and 12-4 overall.

Ingram scored five consecutive points midway through the fourth quarter to help thwart an Aycock rally and lead the Vikings to a 67-47 Eastern Carolina 3-A victory at The Falcons Nest.

"This is a tough place to play and they always give us a tough game," Kinston coach Wells Gulledge said. "Anytime you can come out of here with a win is satisfying."

Ingram had a lot to do with his coach's satisfaction. In addition to the sophomore's 25 points, Ingram scored nine in the decisive fourth period.

After Aycock trimmed a 21-point third deficit to 49-40 with 5:47 left in the game, Ingram buried a 3-pointer, and then added two free throws after being fouled while grabbing an offensive rebound on Kinston's next possession.

His breakaway dunk off of Termaine Miller's behind-the-back pass gave the Vikings a 61-44 advantage with 2:10 to play. Thirty seconds later, he canned two more free throws and was taken out of the game to a standing ovation from the sizeable Kinston contingent.

Ingram connected on nine of 16 shots from the floor and hit five of six free throws. For good measure, he hauled down six rebounds and blocked two shots.

Miguel Starkey added 19 points for Kinston, including 12 in the first half, as the Vikings built a 31-17 lead.

Starkey and Ingram combined to score the first seven points after the break to make the count 38-17 just a minute into the third quarter.

But the Falcons refused to wilt, riding 15 second-half points by Williams to climb back into the game.

Quinton Coples posted a double-double for the Vikings with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked three shots.

In the girls' game, Kinston gave Aycock all it wanted before falling, 53-46.

The Vikings led 28-22 early in the third quarter but then turned the ball over on seven consecutive possessions as Aycock reeled off 15 unanswered points.

"The third quarter was what turned it around for us. We went full-court man-to-man and that's what won the basketball game," Aycock coach Luke Vail said. "We came out strong early, then we had a slow second quarter. In the third quarter, we picked up the defensive intensity. The defense jump-started our offense."

Kinston's scoreless stretch reached 5:38 before Courtney Smith ended the drought with a free throw.

Quaneisha Milner led the Falcons with 15 points, while Jasmine Dobbins chipped in 10 points.

Demicka McMahon led Kinston with 13 points, while Adrienne Lewis added 11, including three 3-pointers.

Aycock returns to ECC action on Friday at Wilson Hunt. Kinston plays host to Southern Wayne in a crucial conference contest Friday at Viking Gym.
