Waters, Chargers pick up CPIC victory

HENDERSON -- Wayne Country Day's Tavon Waters pumped in 23 points as the Chargers upset Kerr-Vance, the defending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A champion on Friday with a 74-59 win.

"It was a huge win for us," WCDS coach Chad Wiggins said.

Adam Wright contributed 21 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four steals for the Chargers, while temmate Jeff Franklin also had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Cameron Strickland added 11 points for WCDS, which improved to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play.

The Chargers return to action on Monday at Trinity of Fayetteville.

Faith improves to 10-0

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian's Aaron Sladick finished with 19 points as the Conquerors defeated Liberty of Fayetteville 61-30 on Thursday.

Faith improved to 10-0 on the season.

T.J. Sasser and Josh Brannan added eight points each for the Conquerors, who hosted Liberty of Durham on Friday.

CBA drops ECC 3-A opener

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock's Lamada Williams scored a team-best 16 points in the Golden Falcons' 80-55 loss at Wilson Beddingfield on Friday in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

Aycock (0-1 ECC) slipped to 4-10 overall, while the Bruins (1-0 ECC) improved to 6-7.

Tim Alston added 15 points for the Falcons, who return to action at home on Monday against Kinston.

Beddingfield's Mike Anderson led all scorers with 19 points, while teammates Dustin Murray and Alfred Artis had 13 points each.

The Bruins outscored Aycock 22-5 in the third period after leading just 34-31 at halftime.

"It was a complete mental breakdown in the third period that beat us," Aycock coach David West said.

Rebels fall to Panthers

CALYPSO -- North Duplin's Terrel Midyette scored a team-best 11 points as the Rebels suffered a 50-37 setback to North Johnston in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play.

North Johnston's Willie Pearce led all scorers with 21 points, while teammate Willie Smith added 12 points for the Panthers (3-5, 2-0 Carolina).

Montreal Garner added nine points for North Duplin (0-6, 0-1).

The Rebels host Princeton on Tuesday in conference action.

Slow start plagues RHS

AYDEN -- Rosewood's Kyle Bunn scored 17 points as the Eagles scored just 18 points in the first half of a 79-55 loss at Ayden-Grifton on Friday.

Brantley Ellis and Stephen McIntyre added 10 points each for Rosewood, which fell to 2-12 overall and 0-2 in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play.

Ayden-Grifton's Kevin Milton had 17 points to lead the Chargers (5-7, 2-0 Carolina).

The Eagles host Spring Creek next Friday.

Faith tallies road win

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian's Austin Webber scored eight points, while Taylor Stocks added seven points in the Conquerors 35-16 win over Liberty of Fayetteville on Thursday.

Faith improved to 5-3 overall and hosted Liberty of Durham on Friday.

Chargers stay unbeaten in CPIC

HENDERSON -- Wayne Country Day's Kameron Byrd scored 15 points as the Chargers defeated Kerr-Vance 35-19 on Friday.

David Wilson added six points and 10 rebounds for WCDS (8-2, 4-0 Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference), which played solid defense through the game.

The Chargers travel to Trinity of Fayetteville on Monday.

Murchison, Wellington pace GHS

Tavon Murchison and Jamison Wellington each posted a double-double in Goldsboro's 60-45, Class 2-A EasternPlains Conference opener over Tarboro High on Friday.

Murchison tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds, and dished out three assists. Wellington provided team highs of 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Deandre Robinson dished out 10 assists and Dan Bryant pulled down nine rebounds. Aric Sinclair blocked three Viking shots.

Goldsboro (7-4, 1-0 EPC) takes the week for exams before visiting Greene Central on Jan. 13.

Simmons, Crawford lead Cougars

Javari Simmons poured in a game-high 21 points as Goldsboro eased past East Duplin 67-60 on Saturday morning in the CougarDen.

Donzell Crawford added 14 points.

Goldsboro High (10-2) travels to Rocky Mount Senior High on Jan. 19.

Eagles nab third win

Wayne Christian's Michelle Krug scored 13 points as the Eagles picked up their third win of the season after a 36-27 victory at home over Trinity Christian of Raleigh.

Katie Daniels added five points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, while Brooke Norris had six points and six rebounds and Hope Wright also had six boards.

Wayne Christian (3-11 overall) hosts Community Christian on Tuesday in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play.

RHS cruises past Chargers

AYDEN -- Rosewood's Courtney Hill had a game-best 19 points in the Eagles' 66-40 win at Ayden-Grifton on Friday in Class 1-A Carolina Conference action.

Rosewood (9-2 overall) improved to 2-0 in conference play heading into next Friday's contest at home against Spring Creek. The Chargers (0-12 overall) fell to 0-2 in league play.

Clare Narron added 18 points for the Eagles, while Shanita Monroe and Kasey Grey had 10 points each.

Tiara Johnson and Lakwoya West led Ayden-Grifton with 10 points each.

CBA falls to unbeaten Bruins

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock's Emily Stewart posted 18 points and nine rebounds, but Wilson Beddingfield erased a one-point deficit at halftime to claim a 75-49 win at home over the Golden Falcons.

Aycock led 27-26 at the half, before the Bruins (13-0, 1-0 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference) outscored the Falcons 26-8 in the third quarter.

"We played the best first half we've played all year against a talented team, then the wheels came off about midway through the third," Aycock coach Luke Vail said. "I think it was just fatigue from running the floor with them full court. They are so fast on the fast break that you have to sprint back, and they were running 10 players in and out. It took its toll on our players."

Chantel Gaines added five points and 12 rebounds for Aycock, which slipped to 9-6 overall and 0-1 in ECC play.

October Harris led three Bruins in double figures with 21 points.

The Falcons return to ECC action at home on Monday against Kinston.

Panthers even Carolina slate at 1-1

CALYPSO -- Caroline Hines pumped in 18 points and Shanice Williams added 13 in North Johnston's 63-31 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Duplin.

"North Johnston dominated us in every phase of the game," said North Duplin coach Danny Blackburn. "When you play against a team coached by David Bagwell, you had better play your best game because his teams will always play hard."

Sierra Ward led the Rebels, who suffered their second consecutive loss, with 15 points. Lauren Blackmore added six.

North Duplin (4-2, 0-1 CC) is the guest of Princeton next Tuesday.

Eleven players scratched in the scoring column as North Johnston (6-4) evened its Carolina Conference worksheet at 1-1.

Vikings top Goldsboro

TARBORO -- Goldsboro's LaQuita Holmes scored 10 points in the Cougars' 40-37 loss at Tarboro High on Friday.

Tiffany Pearsall and Jalescia Brinson added nine points each for Goldsboro (2-10, 1-0 Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference).

Tarboro improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the EPC.

Winter track

RHS splits event with NJ

KENLY -- In their first meets of the season, Rosewood's girls and North Johnston's boys claimed wins in Winter track and field on Thursday.

The Lady Eagles, keyed by two first-place finishes each by Stephanie Behrend, Sa'Coya Cox and Shelita McFall, defeated the Lady Panthers 65-36. Meanwhile, North Johnston's boys edged Rosewood 62-59.

Behrend finished first in the high jump (4'2'') and 500 meter (1:43) and also participated on two winning relay teams in the 4x800 and 4x400. Cox was also on the 4x400 team and claimed wins in the shot put (30'36'') and 300 meter (49.0). McFall took the long jump (14'1'') and 55 meter (6.85) and participated on the 4x400 relay team.

Mary Hollowell won the 1000 meter (4:26) and ran on the 4x800 and 4x400 relay.

In the boys meet, Rosewood got wins from; Devon Bennett in the triple jump (37'6''), 300 meter (38.58) and 55 meter (5.73), Matt Lassiter in the shot put (35'1.5''), Bradley Mullins in the 500 meter (1:44) and Ty Johnson in the 1000 meter (3:23). The Eagles also won the 4x400 relay.

Rosewood returns to action at home against Spring Creek on Jan. 19.

Middle schools

WCDS boys 39, Kerr-Vance 38 -- Brandon Davis scored 22 points and made the game-winning 3-pointer with three seconds left. The Chargers (6-2, 2-0) host St. Mary's on Tuesday.

Dillard boys 56, Greenwood 44 -- Dillard's Braddock Gross scored 14 points, while teammate Demetrio Irby scored 10 points. Greenwood's Matthew Houston scored 11 points. Dillard (6-1, 3-0) hosts Goldsboro on Monday, while Greenwood travels to Eastern Wayne.

Eastern Wayne boys 53, Brogden 35 -- Eastern Wayne's Will White tallied a double-double with 21 points and 20 rebounds, while Jonathan Midgette added 13 points and Dominique Saddler had eight points and 13 rebounds for the Warriors (7-0, 3-0). Brogden's Larenza Alfora scored 10 points for the Rams. Eastern Wayne hosts Greenwood on Monday, while Brogden travels to Norwayne.

Greenwood girls 49, Dillard 25 -- Greenwood's Danielle Daniel poured in a team-high 14 points, while teammates Tiarra McIntyre and Ayanna Albertson had 10 points each. Akeyanna Whitlor led Dillard with 13 points. Greenwood (7-0) travels to Eastern Wayne on Monday, while Dillard hosts Goldsboro.
