Aycock matmen dominate Beddingfield

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock opened its Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference wrestling campaign with a 75-0 shellacking of Wilson Beddingfield on Wednesday evening.

The Golden Falcons (8-0) won eight contested individual matches and received six forfeits from the short-handed Bruins. Aycock upended an ECC opponent for the 13th time in 15 outings since 2004.

"There was a little concern that we would be a little rusty tonight because it has been a long time since we have competed," said Aycock coach Kevin Smith. "Practice has been much more physical and included much more live wrestling over the last three weeks.

"I think that helped us keep our edge over the holiday, and minimized our mistakes on the mat tonight."

Jason Steed (171 pounds), Ngu Tran (119), Bryant Lancaster (145), Steve Bentley (152) and Tim Harrison (160) each recorded a first- or second-period fall. Jordan Pearson (112), Josh Overton (135) and Ronald Lynn (140) each collected a decision.

"I was particularly happy with the performance of Josh and Jordan," said Smith. "Jordan is maturing well for a sophomore. The more he gets on the mat, the better he will get.

"Josh wrestled mistake free ... remained solid on his feet late in the match."

Zach Wright (189), Jarrett Covar (215), heavyweight Shane Lozier, Drake Gurley (103), Derek Lancaster (125) and Sam Rabhan (130) each drew a forfeit.

"We will continue to work on our conditioning so that we can maintain being physical for the full six minutes of a match," said Smith. "This is a relatively young team, and I think that they are just scratching the surface of their full potential.

"Hopefully, tonight will be a step in realizing and achieving that potential. We still have seven weeks to get there."

Aycock plays host to the ninth annual Pilkington Memorial Duals on Saturday. Opening-round matches begin at 9 a.m. Admission is $5 and no passes will be accepted.

The Golden Falcons have won six consecutive Pilkington titles. Teams participating include Southern Wayne, which won the first two Pilkington crowns; SouthWest Edgecombe, Raleigh Broughton, Cedar Ridge, Heide Trask, Wilson Fike, Princeton, Wilson Hunt and Southern Nash.

The tournament is named in honor of former C.B. Aycock coach Terry Pilkington, who passed away in the late 1990s.

Middle schools

Norwayne boys 47, Rosewood 14 -- Tyheem Pitt emerged the lone scorer in double figures with 10 points. The Cobras improved to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I play. Norwayne entertains Brogden next Monday afternoon.

Grantham girls 26, Spring Creek 21 -- Kayla Powell and Brittany Pate tallied 12 and nine points, respectively, for the Bulldogs. Grantham (3-4) climbed to 2-1 against WCMSAC Division II competition and travels to Mount Olive next Monday afternoon.

Norwayne girls 20, Rosewood 14 -- Ashley Steinburg and Courtney Cheeks scored six points each for the Cobras. Taylor Johnston paced Rosewood's offense with five points. Norwayne (6-1) boosted its WCMSAC Division I record to 2-1 and plays host to Brogden next Monday afternoon.

Goldsboro girls 33, Mount Olive 30 -- Sierra McDuffie pumped in 14 points and Lakiyah Campbell contributed 12 for the Cougars, remained unbeaten (3-0) in WCMSAC Division II play. Goldsboro (3-4) is the guest of Dillard next Monday afternoon.

Brogden girls 28, Eastern Wayne 23 -- Alta Black led the Rams with 10 points and six rebounds. Andy Macias contributed eight points. Cathy Benjamin chipped in five points, six steals, four assists and three rebounds. Makyia May paced the Warriors with 10 points. Brogden improved to 3-4, while Eastern Wayne suffered its loss in seven outings.
