Kornegay, Cougars play unselfish game at Jones Senior

TRENTON -- Tim Kornegay provided a game-high 29 points as Goldsboro High throttled Jones Senior 100-61 in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

The Cougars (7-7) dished out 33 assists as a team and snapped a two-game skid heading into Friday's Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference opener at home against Tarboro High.

"We got outstanding efforts from everyone," said fourth-year Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan, whose team shot 9 of 13 from behind the 3-point arc. "This was a true team win and we were very unselfish with the basketball.

"Brandon (Herring) and Burnie (Best) gave us great defensive efforts along with Daquan (Joyner) and Joe Houpe."

Joyner posted a double-double -- 12 points, 14 rebounds -- and blocked seven Jones Senior shots. Herring contributed 15 points and Treme Boone added 13.

Overall, Goldsboro had 12 blocked shots and claimed a decisive 62-36 edge in rebounds. The Cougars picked Jones for 13 steals and forced 29 turnovers in the 32-minute contest.

"This was what we needed to prepare ourselves for our conference opener on Friday," said Jordan.

LaGRANGE -- Monty Best delivered a 17-point outing in Eastern Wayne's 85-69, non-conference loss against 2-A power North Lenoir at Wooten Gymnasium.

Floronta Wynn complemented Best's effort with 16 points. Darryl Cowan added 11 for the Warriors, who dipped to 6-6 overall heading into Friday's contest at archrival Southern Wayne.

Omar Jones led the Hawks 29 points, followed by Samuel Edwards with 20. Adrian Brewer chipped in 15 and Emmanuel Rosber contributed 10.

The Hawks improved to 11-3 overall.

Brittany Sullivan emerged Wayne Christian's top scorer with 11 points in Tuesday evening's 42-36, double-overtime loss against Carolina Christian 1-A rival Northwood Temple.

Sullivan hit the game-tying field goal to force the first overtime. She drained a 3-pointer as time expired, which led to a second overtime session.

Katie Daniels contributed nine points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Hope Wright, who played steady defense all evening, added six points and three rebounds.

Wayne Christian (2-11, 1-4 CCC) entertains Trinity Christian of Raleigh on Friday.

TRENTON -- Senior point guard Chevoya Jackson flirted with a quadruple-double in Goldsboro High's 70-57, non-conference victory Tuesday evening at Jones Senior.

A McDonald's All-American candidate, Jackson collected 32 points, 11 rebounds, 10 steals and six assists. Angel Roberts and Helga Bryant each scored 14 points. Bryant pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Whitney Ward led Jones Senior with 24 points.

Goldsboro (8-5) entertains Tarboro High in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener for both teams on Friday. The Cougars' non-conference game scheduled for today at Wayne Country Day has been canceled.

Gators scratch

in win column

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Sophomore forward Brittani Billups provided a double-double -- 24 points, 15 rebounds -- in Spring Creek's 56-32 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday evening.

It was the league opener for both teams.

Spring Creek (2-12, 1-0 CC) continued its normal slow start in the opening quarter, but got a huge boost from Shaquita Brooks in the second period. Brooks jump started the Gators' offense with buried back-to-back 3-pointers and a two-point field goal.

"Shaquita got the team going," said second-year Spring Creek coach Mandy Ramfjord. "We really had a team effort and this is a good confidence builder for my team."

Tomeka Pride added seven points and five rebounds.

The Gators continue Carolina Conference play Friday at Princeton.

LaGRANGE -- Yasmine Washington emerged Eastern Wayne's lone double-figure scorer with 15 points in a 69-35, non-conference loss at North Lenoir on Tuesday evening.

Carla Miller drained six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points for the Hawks, who improved to 13-1 overall. Katie Maloney added 18 points and Helena Davis contributed 14.

Eastern Wayne (1-11) opens its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference schedule Friday evening at archrival Southern Wayne.

TRENTON -- Kevonta McDuffie led three Goldsboro High players in double figures with 20 points in a 68-66, overtime loss Tuesday afternoon at Jones Senior.

Jamal Rouse and Jamison Wellington contributed 15 and 13 points, respectively, for the Cougars. Tayvon Murchison, who drained a 3-pointer to force overtime, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out five assists.

Goldsboro (6-4) plays host to Tarboro High in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener for both teams Friday.

past Chargers

Johnathan Williams collected game-high scoring honors with 20 points, pacing Charles B. Aycock to a 56-39 victory over Wayne Country Day on Tuesday afternoon.

Michael King added 11 points for the Golden Falcons, who earned just their second victory of the season.

Kameron Byrd led the Chargers with 15 points.

Wayne Country Day (7-3) travels to Kerr-Vance for a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference game Friday. C.B. Aycock opens its Eastern Carolina 3-A schedule at Wilson Beddingfield the same afternoon.

Taylor Stocks led four players in double figures with 14 points in Faith Christian's 53-50, non-conference loss against Hilltop Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

Jeremy Sandlin added 11 points for the Conquerors. Teammates Austin Webber and Josh Spencer each provided 10.

Jonathan Weaver led Hilltop's offensive attack with 16 points.

Eric Williams posted a double-double -- 12 points, 13 rebounds -- and dished out eight assists in Wayne Christian's 40-23 victory over Northwood Temple in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

John Norris added eight points and three assists. Justin Braithwaite chipped in six points and three rebounds.

Charlie Ipock led a balanced scoring attack with nine points and Wayne Christian remained unbeaten on the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference scene with a 28-19 victory over Northwood Temple.

Ipock added three steals and three rebounds for the Eagles, who are 10-1 overall and 5-0 against CCC opposition. Shelle Anderson provided eight points and 13 rebounds.

Cougars ease

past Rosewood

LaQuita Holmes pumped in a team-leading 14 points in Goldsboro's 40-33 victory over county rival Rosewood High on Tuesday afternoon.

Tiffany Pearsall and Jaliscea Brinson tallied 11 and eight points, respectively, for the Cougars.

Paige Babb led the Eagles with 15 points.

Goldsboro improved to 1-9 overall and Rosewood remained winless in eight outings.

Eastern Wayne's Mason Chenier and Ashley Robinson each seized a pair of individual events in a six-team meet contested Tuesday evening at the Goldsboro Family YMCA.

Chenier claimed the 50 freestyle in 23.08 seconds and 100 free in 51.26. His two victories helped the Warrior boys amass 73 points and finish second overall behind Wilson Fike.

Xander Robinson seized the 100 butterfly in 1:04.81 and took second in the 500 free (5:32.78). Melvin Shipman captured the 100 backstroke in 1:03.4 and touched the wall second in the 200 individual medley (2:25.49).

Meanwhile, Ashley Robinson dominated the 200 and 500 free events with times of 2:10.41 and 5:47.96, respectively. Her double-victory outing helped the Warriors collect 80 points and take second place behind the Golden Demons.

Rachael Stoneburner swam a meet-winning time of 1:02.15 in the 100 free and was second in the 200 IM (2:44.6).
