Aycock leads ECC Wachovia Cup standings

CHAPEL HILL -- The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has announced the fall standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competition for the 2005-2006 academic year.

In the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference, Charles B. Aycock took first place in tennis, soccer and golf to land in the top spot in the conference with 69 points. Wilson Hunt is in second with 66.5 after taking the conference championship in football. Eastern Wayne claimed third with 62.5, while Wilson Beddingfield is fourth with 52. Southern Wayne (48.5) and Kinston (25.5) rounded out the ECC's points.

Greene Central, paced by top finishes in football and tennis, leads the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference in points with 25.5. Farmville Central took first in volleyball, landing it in second place overall with 24. Tarboro (17.5), North Pitt (17) and North Lenoir (16) took third, fourth and fifth, respectively, while Goldsboro (8) was sixth.

North Johnston used first-place finishes in football and soccer and a second-place finish in men's cross-country to take first place in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference with 18.5 points. Rosewood is second with 16 with two first-place finishes in volleyball and tennis and a second-place finish in soccer. Spring Creek is third with 15, while Ayden-Grifton is fourth with 11.5. North Duplin and Princeton both finished with eight points.

In the Class 1-A Super Six, Wallace-Rose Hill, James Kenan and Union are in a deadlock for first place with 29 points each. Wallace-Rose Hill had a first-place finish in football, James Kenan won the conference championship in soccer and Union led the conference in volleyball. Hobbton (21.5), Lakewood (16), and Midway (12.5) rounded out the Super Six.

The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences.

The Wachovia Conference Cup -- formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy -- is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award give to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of the four classifications. In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.
