Trojan women entertain NCCU

In the final Mount Olive College athletics event of 2005, the Trojan women's basketball team hopes to improve on its record-setting start. The Trojans face team that's also off to its best start.

Mount Olive tips off New Year's weekend as the Trojans play host to North Carolina Central in non-conference NCAA Division II women's basketball this afternoon at Kornegay Arena. Tipoff is 2 p.m.

Mount Olive (7-1) is playing for the first time since a 56-53 win at Virginia State on December 19. Senior forward Teneal Boone recorded her fifth double-double in eight games with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Boone continues to average a double-double with 18.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.

Along with Boone, six other players have reached double figures in scoring at least once this season. Junior college transfer Ebony Green is second on the team in scoring with 9.3 points per contest.

Sophomore guard Keona Corley, who has reached the 10-assist mark twice this season, is averaging 5.0 assists per game.

The Trojans' 7-1 start is their best ever since Mount Olive and the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference reclassified to NCAA Division II in 1995-96.

North Carolina Central (8-1) is off to its best start in school history after a 63-53 victory over Francis Marion on December 20. Cassie King led NCCU with 26 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

Today's contest is the first of two New Year's Weekend women's basketball contests. The Trojans play host to Presbyterian Monday afternoon.
