JACKSONVILLE -- Southern Wayne's Akeem Royal poured in 30 points and Southern Wayne rolled past Pender 97-36 in the opening game of the three-day White Oak Christmas Tournament on Wednesday.
The Saints (7-1) move on to face Jones Senior today at 6 p.m., while Pender takes on Jacksonville High at 4 p.m.
"We have expectations, but with our preseason schedule we talked about how hard we had to work in practice and play in games," Southern Wayne coach Mike Connelley said. "We've played eight games and had eight great efforts."
Royal hit eight, 3-pointers for the Saints, who jumped out to a 26-7 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Derek Garris put up 16 points for Southern Wayne, while Antonio Davis and Delawn Armwood added 10 points each.
"Playing a 3 p.m. game in the afternoon you want to see if your team is intense, and I thought we were," Connelley said. "I was very pleased with how some of the non-starters played defensively."
Pender was led by James Carter's nine points, while D.J. Powell, Dedric Stringfield and Rayford Hankins chipped in five points apiece.
