ECU football team signs three

GREENVILLE -- Two junior college transfers and one prep school student-athlete have signed mid-year scholarship documents to attend and play football at East Carolina University, head coach Skip Holtz announced this week.

Linebacker Danny Muhwezi from Lackawanna (Pa.) College, linebacker Fred Wilson from Georgia Military College and Andrew Farr from Hargrave Military Academy have all joined the Pirate program and will enroll at ECU in January.

"Due to graduation, our immediate needs centers around the offensive line and linebacker positions," Holtz said. "Needless to say, I'm excited to add two incoming juniors at linebacker and a freshman on the offensive line to address those concerns. I'm looking forward to having them participate in spring practice and creating depth in our program as we head toward the 2006 season."

Muhwezi, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound Iowa native, recorded 60 tackles, six sacks, five forced fumbles and three interceptions while starting all 22 games during his two-year stay at Lackawanna. He helped lead the Falcons to a 5-3 mark in 2005 with 26 stops, which included five tackles for lost yardage.

Muhwezi earned three prep letters at three different high schools, the last coming at Seneca Valley where he played a notable role for a Screaming Eagles' program which rolled to a 10-2 record and a Maryland Class 3-A Championship.

Wilson was a key defensive figure for a Georgia Military College squad which posted a 9-2 record and recently captured the 2005 Golden Isles Bowl title with a 21-17 win over No. 4 Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College.

The 6-foot-2, 255-pound Cross (S.C.) High School product tallied 47 tackles and three sacks for the Bulldogs last season, which included a season-high eight-stop effort at Snow (Utah) College. Wilson enjoyed an illustrious high school career as a three-sport standout who earned a total of seven varsity letters.

He contributed 278 combined tackles as a junior and senior, respectively, to earn all-state and defensive MVP honors.

Farr, a decorated 6-foot-4, 280-pound lineman out of Pell City, Ala., will join the ECU program after spending the 2005 season at Hargrave Military Academy where he contributed a significant role in a mid-season turnaround which helped the Tigers to wins in three of their last four games.

An all-county and all-state selection as a two-year starter and team captain at Pell City High School, Farr was considered as one of Alabama's top offensive linemen prospects by many prep scouting organizations and agencies in 2004.

He helped lead the Panthers to an area championship as a junior a year earlier.
