Joyner leads balanced Goldsboro attack
SMITHFIELD -- Six-foot-7 junior Daquan Joyner spearheaded a solid offensive attack with 14 points, helping Goldsboro squeeze past Smithfield-Selma 74-73 on Wednesday evening.
Eric McLean added 11 points, while Burnie Best and Tim Kornegay each contributed 10.
"I thought we did a great job showing our poise at the end of the game," said Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan, whose team trailed 53-51 heading into the fourth quarter. "We spread the floor and executed when we had to. I thought we got great leadership from McLean and Best.
"Kornegay and Joyner were solid up and down the floor. This was a big win for us."
Ashton Dickinson pumped in a game-high 29 points for the Spartans. Teammate Brandon Grantham provided 19.
Smithfield-Selma outshot Goldsboro 20-6 at the free throw line.
The Cougars (6-5) return to action Dec. 28 against Seattle (Wash.) Prep in the GlaxoSmithKline Invitational. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:40 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum on the N.C. State campus.

paces Cougars
SMITHFIELD -- Goldsboro High senior point guard Chevoya Jackson provided a game-high 22 points in the Cougars' 42-34, non-conference victory Wednesday evening at Smithfield-Selma.
Jackson grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists for the Cougars, who improved to 7-3 overall.
Helga Bryant added eight points, including two 3-pointers. Kianna Williams contributed seven points, while Angel Roberts pulled down six rebounds.
Goldsboro plays again next Tuesday in its own two-day, four-team Christmas tournament.

Cougars pull
out tight victory
SMITHFIELD -- A.J. Fowler led three players in double figures with 25 points and Kevonta McDuffie collected a double-double in Goldsboro's 54-52, non-conference victory over Smithfield-Selma on Wednesday.
McDuffie scored 10 points and snagged 12 rebounds for the Cougars, who head into the new year with a 6-3 record. Goldsboro's next contest is Jan. 3, 2006 at Jones Senior.
Fowler also dished out nine assists.
Jamison Wellington contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, while Tayvon Murchison pulled down 11 boards.
