Goldsboro High School boy's basketball team forced 34 Jones Senior turnovers with a full court trap defense and defeated the Trojans 87-61 at the Cougar Den Monday night.

The steadily improving Lady Cougars captured their sixth win of the season with a 55-47 victory over the Jones Senior girl's team.

Goldsboro boys coach Randy Jordan said he was not completely happy with the win.

"It was a game where a lot of mistakes were made, fortunately we made fewer than they did," he said. "The game was about us getting back to playing hard."

The Cougar boys started the game ice cold from the field but had eight steals in the first quarter and were able to run to a 21-12 lead. The Trojans committed 20 first half turnovers and fell behind 46-26 at the half.

Jones Senior began the third quarter with a full court press trying to fight their way back into the game. However, the Cougars broke the press for easy baskets and maintained their big lead heading into the final quarter.

Goldsboro scored enough baskets to win going away but missed enough easy shots to prevent their coach from being completely satisfied.

"The problem we had tonight we just did not finish, we got great looks and great shots but did not execute," said Jordan.

The Cougars finished with five players in double figures and 12 players scored.

Hobbs and Kornegay had 15 and 14 to lead Goldsboro while Best, Artis and Isler were close behind scoring 12, 10 and 10 respectively.

The Trojans Anthony Hall and Deaundra Barfield led all scorers with 20 and 19 points but Jones Senior could not match the Cougars' balanced attack.

"I am pleased with the effort but we have got to learn to execute, if you are going to be a great team you have to play every night," Jordan said.

The hot shooting Goldsboro girls opened the game with four 3-pointers and grabbed a 12-point lead after one period of play. The Lady Trojans never seriously threatened and the game was not as close as the final score indicated.

"I am really proud of the girls because we are so young and we are trying to improve every game," Goldsboro girls basketball coach Gladys McClary said. "If we improve to the point where we win a game then I am happy, if we show improvement and lose I am still satisfied."

The game was relatively error-free as neither team used a press the entire game. The Jones Senior girls had a height advantage but the Goldsboro girls used their quickness to hold their own on the backboards and grab nearly every loose ball.

"I think when you play a larger team you have to move faster and play smart to get around them and box them out," said McClary.

The Cougars used a 1-3-1 zone defense effectively in the second half. The Trojans managed to cut the lead under 10 points mid way through the fourth quarter but the Cougars relied on star guard Chevoya Jackson's adept ball handling to keep Jones Senior from getting any closer.

While Jackson led the Cougars in scoring with 16 points, Helga Bryant scored a pair of first-quarter threes and finished the game with 10 points. Angel Roberts also scored 11 points for Goldsboro.

The Goldsboro teams will travel to Smithfield Selma on Wednesday night for a rematch with the Spartans.
