Waters leads Chargers to CPIC victory

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Wayne Country Day's Tavon Waters dropped in a game-high 18 points with eight steals and seven assists as the Chargers drilled Halifax Academy 79-32 on Friday night.

The win improves WCDS to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference.

Adam Wright added 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds for the Chargers, while Phillip Weeks had 12 points, five steals, five rebounds and five assists. Kyle Pender scored nine for WCDS, all coming in the second half.

The Chargers knocked down six, 3-pointers on the game.

Jeremy Wells led Halifax with 12 points.

WCDS returns to action on Dec. 27-28 at the Rosewood Holiday Tournament. The Chargers face Rosewood at 8 p.m. on the first day of the tourney, while East Wake and Durham School of the Arts are in the 6 p.m. contest.

Gators drop fifth straight

CLINTON -- Spring Creek's Cliff Wilson scored 16 points, six steals and five rebounds as the Gators lost for the fifth time in as many outings as Union claimed a 75-62 win.

David Harris added 15 points Spring Creek (4-6), while Daniel Chewning scored 13.

Union's Zack Honeycutt led all scorers with 19 points as Dusty Weeks and Brandon Taylor had 16 and 10 points, respectively. The Spartans built a 40-20 halftime lead in the non-conference contest.

Spring Creek shot just over 30 percent from the floor.

On Thursday, Chewning led the Gators with 12 points, while Harris added 11 points in a 62-48 loss at Dixon.

Dixon's Casey Raynor scored 23 to lead all scorers.

Leading contributors, Dalreese Bell and Josh Wright, did not play in either game for Spring Creek.

The Gators return to action on Tuesday at home against South Lenoir.

Rebels suffer home loss

CALYPSO -- North Duplin's Doug Lloyd had a team-best 10 points as the Rebels fell at home 66-43 on Friday night.

Brian McDuffie added eight points for North Duplin (0-4), which doesn't play again until Jan. 4 when they face Union at home.

Ty Teachey led Hobbton with 13 points, while Kenyon Stevens chipped in 11 points. The Wildcats jumped out to a 16-5 lead after the first quarter and led 35-18 at the half.

ROSEBORO -- Princeton's Will Gainey scored 14 points in the Bulldogs' 63-43 at Lakewood on Friday.

Taylor Lane added 13 points and seven rebounds for Princeton, which dropped to 4-6 on the season.

Joe Warrson led three Leopards in double figures with 16 points as Josh Owens and Willie Williams had 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The Bulldogs travel to James Kenan on Monday.

Faith tallies road win

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Playing close to 200 miles from home, Faith Christian defeated Gateway Christian (Va.) 28-19 on Friday.

Elizabeth Clarke proved the lone scorer in double figures for either team with 10 points, while Natalie Thibeaux contributed six points.

The Lady Conquerors fell behind 15-13 at the half, but held Gateway to just four points after intermission on their way to improving to 5-2 on the year.

Faith hosts Hilltop Christian on Jan. 3.

Ward posts triple-double

CALYPSO -- North Duplin's Sierra Ward tallied a triple-double with 14 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists as the Rebels improved to 4-0 with a 50-40 win over Hobbton at home on Friday.

North Duplin's Lauren Blackmore added 18 points in the victory.

Tracey Williams led Hobbton with 10 points, while leading scorer Shakala Williams was held to just nine points, 11 points under her season average.

The Lady Rebels return to action on Jan. 4 at home against Union.

SCHS loses lead at Union

CLINTON -- Spring Creek's Brittani Billups turned in a solid performance with 22 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and three steals as the Gators suffered a 46-42 loss at Union on Friday.

Spring Creek (1-8) led by as much as 10 at one point, only to see the Lady Spartans erase the lead on their home floor.

Tomeka Pride added 10 points and eight boards for the Gators, while Anna Potter dished out five assists.

Spring Creek returns to action on Tuesday at home against South Lenoir.

WCS falls to Cougars

RED SPRINGS -- Wayne Christian's Michelle Krug had nine points in the Eagles' 35-22 loss at Flora MacDonald Academy on Friday.

Wayne Christian (2-10 overall) dropped to 1-3 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play, heading into a Jan. 3 contest at home against Northwood.

Katie Daniels tallied six blocked shots for the Eagles, while teammate Brooke Norris had five points and five rebounds.

Wilson, Byrd pace WCDS

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Despite foul trouble, Wayne Country Day's David Wilson turned in his best performance of the year with 25 points and 12 rebounds as the Chargers dropped Halifax Academy 67-42 on Friday.

Kameron Byrd contributed 12 points for the Chargers, who improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play.

WCDS returns to action on Jan. 3 at home against Charles B. Aycock.

GHS drops Saints at home

Goldsboro's A.J. Fowler had 13 points and five assists to help lead the Cougars to a 62-57 win at home over Southern Wayne on Friday.

Kevonta McDuffie added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as Goldsboro improved to 5-2 on the season. Jameson Wellington (11 points, five rebounds) and Aric Sinclair (eight points, four blocks) also contributed for the Cougars.

Goldsboro returns to action on Monday at home against Jones Senior.

RHS evens overall slate

Rosewood's Joey Boyette scored eight points to lead the Eagles to a 46-36 win at home over Midway on Friday.

Taylor Allen chipped in seven points for Rosewood (4-4).

Jonathan Welker paced Midway with nine points.

The Eagles host North Johnston on Tuesday in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

Williams sparks WCS

ZEBULON -- Wayne Christian's Eric Williams turned in another double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while adding seven blocks and four assists as the Eagles dropped East Wake Academy 41-36 on Friday.

John Norris added 11 points and four steals for the Eagles, who improved to 5-4 overall, while Brian Alexander had five points and five steals.

Thad Pope led East Wake with 12 points.

WCS hosts Northwood Temple on Jan. 3.

Eagles suffer first loss

ZEBULON -- Wayne Christian's Hanna Kaler posted 15 points as the Eagles fell for the first time this season after a 48-40 loss to East Wake Academy.

Shelle Anderson added 10 points for Wayne Christian (9-1), which hosts Northwood Temple on Jan. 3.

On Thursday, Kaler scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the Eagles' 35-18 win over Flora MacDonald in Red Springs. Anderson contributed six points and 10 boards as Wayne Christian improved to 4-0 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play.

9th grade boys

GHS tops county rival

DUDLEY -- Goldsboro's Donzel Crawford led the Cougars with 19 points in a 79-72 win at Southern Wayne on Friday.

The Saints' Reginald Pierce paced his team with 18 points.

Goldsboro improved to 6-2 on the season.

WCDS boys 31, Halifax 13 -- Brandon Davis scored 13 points for WCDS (5-2, 1-0), while Cameron Ford added 10. The Chargers travel to Kerr-Vance on Jan. 6.

Goldsboro girls 49, Grantham 23 -- Goldsboro's Zeara McDuffie tallied 25 points to lead all scorers. Goldsboro (1-4, 1-0) travels to Spring Creek on Monday.
