Falcons notch non-conference win

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rob Phillips and Lamada Williams combined for 18 points in the fourth quarter and sparked Charles B. Aycock to a 55-51, non-conference victory over Northern Nash on Thursday evening.

Phillips collected a game-high 21 points and dished out three assists for the Golden Falcons, who were playing their fifth game in nine school days. Williams provided eight points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Santavin Poole chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds.

Michael Hilliard led the Knights, of the Class 3-A NEW Athletic 6 Conference, with 14 points.

C.B. Aycock entertains Clayton today.

Eagles drop

RED SPRINGS -- Billy Smith tallied a team-high 13 points in Wayne Christian's 43-40, non-conference loss Thursday evening at Flora MacDonald Academy.

Jordan Yelverton added nine for the Eagles, who dropped to 7-5 overall.

Wayne Christian entertains Northwood Temple in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play on Jan. 3.

ROCKY MOUNT -- A flat, third-quarter effort proved costly and allowed Northern Nash to gain momentum in a 56-44, non-conference victory over C.B. Aycock on Thursday evening.

The Knights outscored the Golden Falcons 18-8 in the third quarter, and sealed the win with solid free throw shooting in the final period. Northern Nash (5-3) drained 10 of 18 free throws and extended its scant six-point to the final 12-point margin.

"We went flat early in the third quarter and had to play catch up the rest of the way," said C.B. Aycock coach Luke Vail. "We made a great comeback and cut it to six with two minutes to go. I was proud of our players because we've had five games in nine days (against) some high-quality opponents.

"They're the biggest team we've played against and they execute well."

Quaneisha Milner led the Golden Falcons with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and snagged seven rebounds. Senior Emily Stewart posted a double-double -- 11 points, 10 rebounds. Erin Medford added five points and five assists.

Nikki Battle paced the Knights with 16 points, while Shanessa Freeman added 13.

The teams combined for 13 three-pointers.

C.B. Aycock (5-5) entertains Clayton today. Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 6 p.m.

Bulldogs sink

HOLLY RIDGE -- Dixon converted all 10 free throws in the final quarter and turned back Spring Creek 54-44 in non-conference play Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs, of the Coastal Plains 1-A Conference, drained 13 of 15 free throws in the second half after missing all five attempts in the opening half.

Sophomore Chelsea D'Zurilla led Dixon with 27 points, while Lesleigh Thompson added 12.

Spring Creek sophomore Brittani Billups flirted with a triple-double -- 28 points, 16 rebounds and eight blocked shots. She shot 10 of 21 from the floor and a season-best 8 for 12 at the free throw line.

Tomeka Pride and Barbara Witherington each scored five points. Pride contributed seven rebounds and four steals.

"I'm very proud of my girls' effort tonight," said second-year Gators coach Mandy Ramjford. "We played team ball and were ready to play despite the (one-point) loss from Hobbton. The scoreboard doesn't show it, but we're improving every day."

Spring Creek (1-8) is the guest of Union today.

Middle schools

Dillard boys 60, Spring Creek 20 -- Demetrio Irby scored 14 points and Braddock Gross added 12 for the Tigers, now 5-1 overall and 2-0 against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II opponents. Colby Strickland led the Gators with seven points. Dillard is the guest of Mount Olive next Monday afternoon.

Greenwood girls 27, Rosewood 22 -- Ayanna Albertson led a balanced T-Bird attack with nine points and Tiarra McIntyre provided eight for unbeaten Greenwood (5-0). Angelica Knight emerged Rosewood's top scorer with six points. Greenwood entertains Brogden next Monday.

Spring Creek girls 28, Dillard 14 -- Melanique DeVeaux paced Spring Creek with 12 points, while teammate Amy Parker chipped in 10. Spring Creek (3-2, 2-0 WCMSAC Division II) plays host to Goldsboro next Monday afternoon.

Greenwood boys 47, Rosewood 41 -- Rasheed Williams and Matthew Houston tallied 15 points and 14 points, respectively, for Greenwood. Danny Smith dished out 10 assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Will Beasley and Von Tariusk each had 10 points for the Eagles. Greenwood (2-3) entertains Brogden next Monday afternoon.

Norwayne girls 27, Eastern Wayne 14 -- Tacoya Newsome had seven points and Nicole Kessler added six points for the Cobras. Cathy Benjamin led the previously-unbeaten Warriors with four points. Norwayne (4-4, 1-1 WCMSAC Division I) plays host to Grantham next Monday afternoon.

Eastern Wayne boys 60, Norwayne 43 -- Hassan Best pumped in 17 points and dished out eight assists for the Warriors. Will White contributed 14 points and seven rebounds. Dominique Saddler provided 10 points and seven rebounds, while Johnathan Midgette chipped in eight points and seven rebounds. Eastern Wayne (5-0) handed Norwayne its first loss of the season. Tyler Ruffin had 13 points and Shephard Whitfield added 10 for the Cobras. The Warriors entertain Rosewood next Monday afternoon.
