MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive returned to the top 10 in this week's NABC Division II men's top 25 poll. Ranked as high as No. 6, the Trojans are 10th after a home victory last week against Concord (W. Va.) College.
Mount Olive (5-1 overall) received 107 points in the poll -- 10 points behind No. 9 Winona State and 10 points ahead of No. 11 West Virginia State. The Trojans play at West Virginia State on January 4.
Montevallo (Ala.) holds at No. 1 for the third consecutive week, receiving all eight first-place votes and finishing with 200 points. Preseason No. 1 Tarleton State (Texas) holds at No. 2, while defending national champion Virginia Union stays at No. 3.
Mount Olive is among four East Region teams ranked in the top 25. Joining the Trojans and West Virginia State are No. 17 West Liberty State (Pa.) and CVAC member Pfeiffer at No. 23.
The next poll will be announced next Tuesday.
Mount Olive plays host to in-state rival St. Andrews today. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
Boone cops
CVAC honor
Teneal Boone has been named the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's basketball player of the week -- the first-ever award for Boone and the first this season for Mount Olive.
A 6-foot-1 senior from Jacksonville, Boone flirted with a triple-double in the Trojans' 73-45, non-conference victory over Chowan last Wednesday.
She scored 24 points, pulled down nine rebounds and recorded a career-high six blocked shots. Boone scored 14 points in the first half as Mount Olive built a double-digit lead. She connected on three baskets during a 14-2 run in the second half to break the game open, capping the run with a fast-break layup ignited by her sixth block of the game.
Boone, who is averaging a double-double with 17.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, came within one board of her fourth double-double, but she sat out the final 5:30 of the game with Mount Olive holding a 20-point lead.
Mount Olive is off to its best start in more than a decade as the Trojans have opened with a 5-1 record. Mount Olive is in a tie for third in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference standings with a 1-1 mark.
The Trojans entertain in-state CVAC rival St. Andrews today. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
