Eastern Wayne pins Spring Creek

Eastern Wayne prevailed in every contested match and received three forfeits in a 69-0, non-conference victory over county rival Spring Creek on Tuesday evening.

The teams double forfeited at 103 pounds.

Senior Travis Turner started the match with a first-period pin of the Gators' Patrick Murphy. Tyler Wicks followed with a pin and Brandon Johnson handed Wes Denham, a two-time state qualifier, his first loss in 11 outings.

Heavyweight Foy Coley boosted the Warriors' match advantage to 27-0 with a third-period pin of Dwight Strickland. After the double forfeit, Eastern Wayne got match wins from Jordan Harris (112 pounds), Chris Tesar (125), A.J. Washington (135), Detori Mitchell (140), Joey Burridge (152) and Brian Lincoln (160).

James Knight (119), Brack Duvall (130) and Hank Condon (145) each earned a forfeit.

Eastern Wayne (4-1) returns to action Saturday in a day-long dual tournament at Jacksonville Northside. Spring Creek entertains county rival Southern Wayne on Dec. 21.

turns back Bruins

WILSON -- Greene Central collected nine individual wins, including six forfeits, in a 51-25 victory over Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday evening.

The Bruins owned a 4-3 advantage in contested matches.

"Our kids are steadily improving," said third-year Greene Central coach Dan Minor. "We are focusing on the team, staying aware of the score in close matches. While we try to win each individual match, the guys are starting to realize the importance of saving every team point when we lose an individual match."

Billy Teston (152 pounds) and Darrin Gorham (189) each earned a decision, while 215-pounder Marquis Eanes pinned Beddingfield's Spencer Warren in 27 seconds.

Phillip Freeman (103), Aaron Avery (125), Robert Phillips (130), Jeffrey Shingleton (135), Chris Jones (140) and heavyweight Justin Wellington each picked up a forfeit.

girls take second

Eastern Wayne's Mason Chenier and Melvin Shippman each claimed a pair of victories in a four-team meet contested Tuesday evening at the Goldsboro YMCA.

Chenier emerged the top competitor in the 50 free (22.87 seconds) and 100 free (49.65). Both times automatically qualified Chenier for a spot in the N.C. High School Athletic Association regionals.

Shippman placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:02.77) and 200 individual medley (2:21.7). He has also qualified for the NCHSAA regionals.

Xander Robinson finished second overall and posted regional-qualifying times in the 100 butterfly (1:05.77) and 500 free (5:31.35).

The trio helped the Warriors take second overall with 82 points. J.H. Rose was first with 124. Charles B. Aycock edged Kinston 39-37 for third-place honors.

Ashley Robinson notched regional-qualifying marks in the 200 free (2;05.98) and 50 free (27.42). She finished second overall in both events.

Rachael Stoneburner qualified for the regionals with a second-place time of 6:32.01 in the 500 free. She swam a 2:46.21 in the 200 IM.

Eastern Wayne collected 67 points, compared to meet winner J.H. Rose with 131. Aycock scored 41 and Kinston picked up 5.

pick up victory

PRINCETON -- Taylor Lane pumped in a game-high 18 points in Princeton's 76-40, non-conference victory against Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf on Tuesday evening.

Ryan Daughtry added 16 points for the Dawgs, who rose to 4-5 overall.

James Brown led the Hornets with 16 points.

Princeton is the guest of Lakewood on Friday.

Tyrell Midgette added nine points for the Rebels, who fell to 0-3 overall.

Zack Faircloth led three Leopards in double figures with 21 points. Willie Williams added 15, while Joe Warren chipped in 12.

past Rosewood

CLINTON -- Kyle Bunn poured in 22 points, including nine from 3-point range, in Rosewood's 66-53, non-conference setback against Super Six 1-A member Union on Tuesday evening.

The Eagles remained winless in six outings.

"We played pretty well the first half defensively, I thought," said Rosewood coach Daniel Mitchell. "We had a breakdown defensively in the second half and it's hard to fight uphill."

Union turned a three-point halftime lead into a 10-point advantage after three quarters.

The Spartans' Zack Honeycutt blistered the nets for 34 points, including 15 from behind the 3-point arc. Tobias Adams added 13.

Rosewood entertains Hobbton today.

ROSEBORO -- Senior Sierra Ward led three North Duplin players in double figures with 17 points in a 55-44, non-conference victory over Lakewood.

Lauren Blackmore added 16 points and Kayla Myers contributed 10 for the Rebels, who climbed to 3-0 overall.

Lindsay Benton led Lakewood with 14 points.

"We played very sloppy tonight (and) we're very lucky to have come out with a win," said Rebels coach Danny Blackburn. "I feel like we took a huge step backwards. The ability to be a good team is there, but we must play hard every second of every game."

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Brittany Billups and Tomeka Pride each turned in a double-double, but Spring Creek endured a 53-52, non-conference loss against Hobbton on Tuesday evening.

Billups provided 21 points and 15 rebounds, but missed a potential game-tying free throw with one second remaining in regulation. Pride contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds.

"We looked better on both ends of the court last night, but we are still making little mistakes that are costing us big in the end," said second-year Spring Creek coach Mandy Ramjford. "Billups and Pride carried the team once more and I had a few step up at times. The team has improved a lot since last year, but we just have to fix the little things."

Shakala Williams led Hobbton with 28 points.

comeback victory

Jamere Thomas' steal and layup, and Cody Kirkham's two free throws helped Eastern Wayne rally past county rival Goldsboro 78-74 on Tuesday afternoon.

Leonard Compton pushed Goldsboro in front 73-72 on a layup off a Warrior turnover near midcourt with 39 seconds remaining in regulation. Darrius Wilder answered with a 6-footer off Daviyon Whisonant's assist and Thomas' layup -- his only basket of the game -- provided Eastern Wayne with a 76-73 lead.

The Cougars' Kevonta McDuffie hit the back end of a two-shot foul to make it 76-74. Kirkham, one of four Warriors who scored in double figures, drained two free throws and preserved the four-point victory.

Kirkham finished with 15 points, including a 5-of-7 effort from the field. Darian Cahill emerged the Warriors' top scorer with 18 points. Whisonant contributed 14 points and three assists. Wilder added 14 points and nine rebounds.

McDuffie posted a double-double -- 20 points, 10 rebounds -- for the Cougars. A.J. Fowler chipped in 17, followed by Compton with 13 and Tavon Murchison with 10.

Goldsboro (4-2) plays host to county rival Southern Wayne on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Eastern Wayne exited 5-3.
