Goldsboro wins thriller vs. Aycock

Tim Kornegay poured in a game-high 28 points as Goldsboro rallied to top Charles B. Aycock on Friday night at the Cougars Den, 72-70.

With fellow captain Daquan Joyner saddled with foul trouble for much of the game, the 6-foot-5 junior forward shot 11-of-17 from the field -- draining four trifectas along the way -- as Goldsboro improved to 3-4 and completed the season sweep of the Golden Falcons (2-6).

"Tim showed why he's one of the premier players in the area tonight," Goldsboro High coach Randy Jordan said. "This was a big win for us -- we really needed it."

In the girls game, the Golden Falcons (4-4) used a 9-0 run in the final 30-plus seconds to upend Goldsboro (3-3) by a score of 67-58. The game was tied at 58 with less than a minute to go when Jazzmine Lee pulled off a traditional three-point play with 31.6 seconds left -- losing her shoe in the process -- then calmly laced a pair of free throws after getting a big rebound at the other end to give C.B. Aycock the lead for good.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Aycock, which had lost all three of those contests in overtime.

"That was an exciting ballgame," Falcons coach Luke Vail said. "Jazzmine Lee stepped up big for us there in the final minute and helped turn the momentum in our favor.

"After those three heartbreaking overtime losses, this really helped get our confidence back and I think we really grew up tonight."

In the late game, the Falcons led 55-54 early in the fourth quarter, but went ice cold from the field as Goldsboro pulled out to a 65-55 lead with just more than four minutes to play.

The Golden Falcons, however, made one last run, cutting the lead to 71-70 with less than 30 seconds left, but Rob Phillips missed a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer that could have send the game into overtime. Aycock's Brandon Price also missed a front end of a one-and-one with 10.9 seconds to play that could have given the visitors the lead.

"It wasn't that free throw and the shot at the end that lost it for us," Aycock coach David West said. "It is the free throws and easy shots you miss during the game when there isn't as much pressure that comes back to haunt you. We love this rivalry with Goldsboro, but this one hurts real bad. However, we'll get back up and move forward."

Santavin Poole scored a team-high 22 points for Aycock before fouling out, and Lamada Williams returned to action after missing time with an injury and scored 18 points for the Falcons.

"We didn't get frustrated, we held our poise and we knew we could come back," West said. "We stayed with our game plan and it almost worked."

After sitting out a good portion of the contest due to foul trouble, Joyner came on strong in the fourth quarter, scoring seven of his 13 points in the final frame. The 6-foot-7 Joyner also pulled down 12 rebounds. Also for Goldsboro, Eric McLean reached double figures with 12 points.

"We played hard from start to finish, and probably played our best defense all year," said Jordan, whose team will host Eastern Wayne on Tuesday and Southern Wayne on Friday. "That's a good basketball team we beat tonight -- they're well-coached, they play hard and they have one of the best guard tandems I've seen in a while in Lamada Williams and Rob Phillips. I give all the credit to our kids, we matured tonight."

In the girls game, Chevoya Jackson scored a game-high 27 points for Goldsboro, which played without the services of freshman starting guard Kianna Williams, who missed the contest due to illness.

"Chevoya carried her team," Goldsboro coach Gladys McClary said. "And as a whole, they really played hard -- I've never seen them come out as relaxed and confident even though we only had seven players. The mistakes we made late were just due to inexperience, and I can live with that because they are developing and will only get better."

Four players reached double figures for the Falcons. Quaneisha Milner scored 19 points and had five steals, Lee had 18 points, Emily Stewart had 15 points and nine rebounds and Jasmine Dobbins had 12 points.

The Falcons will play at North Lenoir on Tuesday and will visit Northern Nash on Thursday before hosting Clayton on Friday night.
