Rosewood goes cold against Farmville Central

Scoring droughts and untimely turnovers plagued the Rosewood boys and girls basketball teams on Thursday as Farmville Central claimed a pair of wins at the Eagles' gymnasium on Thursday night.

The Lady Jaguars posted an 8-0 run early in the second quarter with tough scoring on the inside from Stephony Newkirk and pressuring defense. Rosewood battled back in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as Farmville Central (3-1) claimed a 53-43 victory.

The loss was the Eagles first in four outings as they fell to 3-1.

In the boys game, Farmville turned a 23-19 halftime lead into a 15-point advantage merely three minutes into the third quarter. The deeper, athletic Jaguars (4-0) eventually outscored Rosewood 28-7 in the third quarter on their way to a 64-43 win.

The game proved to be physical and was mired in sloppy play throughout by both sides.

The Eagles (0-4) committed 28 turnovers, including four in a row that led to Farmville baskets to start the second quarter.

"We got a little excited and turned it over and let them get out in transition," Rosewood boys coach Daniel Mitchell said. "We didn't play good transition defense, and they got some easy baskets."

The Jaguars had 21 total turnovers and committed 27 total fouls, while Rosewood was whistled for 26 fouls. The two non-conference foes combined to shoot 69 free throws as Farmville was a chilly, 18-for-39 and the Eagles were 15-of-30.

Courtney Hill led Rosewood's girls with 10 points, including six in a fourth quarter that saw the Eagles score 19 points - just four less than they scored in the first three quarters combined. In the first three quarters, Rosewood committed 22 of its 26 turnovers as Newkirk, who finished with 12 points, and the Jaguars led 37-24 after three.

"We were rushing, instead of slowing the ball down and getting it up the court," said Rosewood assistant coach Jennifer Cochran. "We were getting the ball defensively, then we were giving it away. But, they (Farmville Central) did a good job playing defense."

Cochran is handling head coaching duties this week as Jerry Narron, also the Cincinnati Reds manager, attends Major League Baseball's Winter Meetings.

Farmville standout guard Megan Zullo was quiet through three quarters with just seven points, before knocking down two, 3-pointers and one two-point basket in the fourth quarter to finish with a team-best 15 points.

Rosewood senior guard Clare Narron added eight points, but was saddled with foul trouble through most of the final three quarters. Seniors Stephanie Rhodes and Kasey Grey chipped in six points each in the post.

The Eagles finished with just as many field goals as their opponent, 19, but got to the line only five times compared to 20 by the Jags. Farmville finished 12-of-20 from the stripe, while Rosewood shot 3-of-5.

"If we get to the line a few more times, this game would have been a lot closer. I really think tonight was good test for us," Cochran said.

Before the game got away from Rosewood's boys, the Eagles cut into a 19-8 deficit in the second quarter with scrappy defense and timely baskets by Stephen McIntyre. McIntyre posted a put-back, then drained two-of-two from the stripe during a 20-second span late in the half to cut the margin to 23-19 heading into the break.

From there, Farmville's depth and quickness seemed to take over as Rosewood never got on track against a mixture of pressure defenses by the Jaguars.

Rosewood's leading scorer Kyle Bunn finished with just nine points and managed just two field goals, while McIntyre added eight points.

The Jaguars' Javious Dixon proved to be the lone scorer in double figures with 14 points.

Farmville, which had 12 players with significant minutes, didn't seem phased by the constant fouling as the Jaguars didn't have a single player with four fouls. Meanwhile, two Rosewood players fouled out and one more Eagle had four fouls.

The Eagles' teams look to bounce back today at Midway in Spivey's Corner.
