WINSTON-SALEM -- Fifteen local athletes participated in the 2005 Special Olympics North Carolina Fall Games contested Nov. 4-6.

The athletes participated in the four-person bowling competition, golf individual stroke and two-man alternate shot competitions. The delegation was headed by local coordinator Beth Rivenbark.

Bowling coach Don Jenkins and athletes Robert Walker and Steven Hannum led the Wayne County delegation in the opening ceremonies, while Erica Walderman was selected to light the ceremonial torch.

The Wayne Flyers team consisting of Jennifer Cruz, Heather Pardue, Layne Turner and Melissa Stanford took home a silver medal in their division. The Wayne Warriors team consisting of Robert Benson, Miquel Sheffield, Jessie Martinez and Alan Jenkins took home gold in their division. The Wayne Jets team consisting of Robert Walker, Shannon Moore, Jonathan Delano and Charlie Nail took home the silver in their division. Jenkins and Dorothy Moore coached the bowling team.

In golf, the 9-hole alternate shot team of Steven and Bob Hannum participated in their first state games competition and took home the silver medal.

Walderman won her fifth consecutive gold medal in the women's 9-hole individual stroke competition. She now prepares to participate in the 2006 Special Olympic National Games to be held in Ames, Iowa next July. The golfers were coached by Debi and Rich Walderman.
