Wayne Country Day's boys' basketball team turned in a near-perfect performance Tuesday night and routed Kinston's Parrott Academy 67-26 in a non-conference basketball game.
Earlier in the evening, the quick and talented Parrott girls held off a fourth-quarter rally by the Lady Chargers to claim a 50-44 win.
The Wayne Country boys started fast and never let up to improve their record to 6-3. A stifling Charger zone defense kept the visiting Patriot boys away from the basket all night, and Wayne Country Day's Adam Wright burned the nets for 27 points in a game that was never close.
"We have been working in practice on getting after it, we put defense first and let the offense come as a result of the defense," Wayne Country Day coach Chad Wiggins said.
The Chargers roared to an 18-4 lead after one quarter and never let Parrott Academy close the gap. The deep Wayne Country Day team used all 11 players and 10 scored.
"It is a pleasure to coach when you can just put someone in the game and not have a drop off," Wiggins said. "We have about nine players we consider starters. That is what you want as a basketball coach.
Trailing 37-14 after the first half, Parrott decided to use full-court pressure to begin the third quarter, but the Chargers had an answer. Crisp ball handling and passing allowed Wayne Country Day easy baskets and forced the Patriots to abandon the press.
On this night the Chargers were solid in every facet of the game. An efficient half-court offense allowed Wayne Country Day easy baskets underneath. Dominance on the boards kept Parrott Academy from a rally anytime during the game.
The Chargers had an excellent game running the floor also.
"When we get the ball up the floor and push it that is when we are at our best," Wiggins said.
Wright's 27 points included baskets from all over the floor. Phillip Weeks followed with eight points and Lamar Carpenter and Travis Davis added six each.
Brick Crowder led Parrott with nine points.
The Lady Chargers battled, but could not overcome a sluggish start.
"We were playing lax until the fourth quarter. We were not as aggressive as we usually play," Wayne Country Day girls coach Tonia Ingram said. "Bottom line, we did not step up and play as well as we should have tonight."
The Lady Patriots jumped out to a 16-8 lead after the first quarter. A disastrous 4-point third quarter by Wayne Country Day gave the visiting Parrott team a 40-26 lead heading into the final quarter.
Just as it seemed Parrott Academy would cruise to an easy win, the Lady Charger defensive intensity turned the game around. A 3-point basket by Tiara Broadie cut the Parrott lead to nine with 3:45 left, forcing the Lady Patriots to call timeout and regroup.
Ashley Clark hit her second 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to five with a little less than two minutes left in the game. Parrott again called timeout -- trying to slow down the fast-closing Chargers.
The Lady Patriots were able to hang on and win as Carmen Bright scored two baskets in the final minute to preserve the victory.
Broadie led Wayne Country Day with 21 points followed by Clark's nine, all on 3-pointers. Molly Peacock also scored five points and had several key steals and defensive stops in the Chargers' 20-point fourth quarter. Jaclyn Ervin led Parrott Academy with 21 points.
The Chargers host Flora McDonald Academy Friday night.
