MOC men top Saints; Lady Trojans fall

GAFFNEY, S.C.-- The No. 6 ranked Mount Olive edged Limestone (S.C.) 65-59 in men's basketball action on Saturday night at the Timken Center.
The Saints, who have yet to win a home game this season, drop to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. Mount Olive evens its CVAC record to 1-1 is 4-1 overall.
Limestone junior Shawn Poppie scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Junior Sumner Benton was the only other Saint to score in double-digits with 10. Benton had a game-high eight rebounds.
Three Trojans posted double-digit scoring as Elton Coffield had a game-high 20 points, Elijah Rouse had 14 and Melvin Creddle added 11. Rouse and Creddle posted seven rebounds each.
Mount Olive nailed 10-of-12 free throws for a free-throw percentage of 83.3%, while Limestone made only 8-of-16. The Saints converted 20 points from 14 Trojan turnovers. Mount Olive had 15 points from 16 turnovers committed by its opponent.
While the beginning of the first half was fairly close, the Saints began to gain the lead near the seven- minute mark and led by as much as 14. However, Mount Olive cameback to take its first lead at 32-30 at the end of the first half.
The teams battled throughout the second half with neither squad leading the other by more than a few points until the final minute. Down 58-59 in the final seconds, Rouse made a lay-up to put his team up by one. Five free throws combimed by Creddle and Coffield sealed the win for Mount Olive.
Mount Olive returns to action on Tuesday at home against Concord (W. Va.) College in non-conference action. Limestone will be on the road for its next game against Newberry College (S.C.) on Wednesday.
Lady Trojans
suffer first loss
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Limestone's women's basketball team won a thrilling conference contest over Mount Olive College as the Lady Saints edged the Trojans 62-61.
The Lady Saints came out more consistent from the floor in the first half. The Saints shot 41 percent, compared to Mount Olive's 27 percent.
Mount Olive outscored the Lady Saints 33-29 in the second half, but Limestone managed to hang on with Melissa DeVore hitting her twelfth free throw of the night to put the Lady Saints on top 62-61.
DeVore netted 5-8 from the floor and 12-16 from the line for a game high 22 points. Monica Adams added 13 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.
Teneal Boone led three Trojans in double figures with 15 points, while grabbing 15 rebounds. Mount Olive's Ebony Green added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Sierra Medeiros contrbuted 10 points and eight rebounds.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Mount Olive hosts Chowan, while Limestone will face Converse College (S.C.).
