Charger varsities fall at Word of God

RALEIGH -- Adam Wright pumped in a team-high 15 points in Wayne Country Day's 79-35, non-conference loss Thursday evening at perennial independent schools power Word of God.

The Chargers fell to 4-3 overall heading into next Tuesday's home game against Arendell-Parrott Academy.

RALEIGH -- Tiera Broadie notched a double-double -- 19 points, 10 rebounds -- in Wayne Country Day's 46-39, non-conference defeat Thursday evening at Word of God.

Virginia Best chipped in six points.

Molly Peacock grabbed nine rebounds.

Wayne Country Day (3-4) entertains Arendell-Parrott Academy next Tuesday.

RALEIGH -- Word of God claimed a 59-46 victory and snapped Wayne Country Day's 27-game win streak Thursday evening.

David Wilson led the Chargers with 15 points, including 11 of 12 at the free throw line. Tyler Pate added 14, including 12 points from behind the 3-point line. Kameron Byrd provided nine points.

Wayne Country Day, which ended last season with a 22-game win streak, fell to 5-1 overall. The Chargers play host to Arendell-Parrott Academy next Tuesday.

WCDS cruises

past St. Mary's

Wayne Country Day's Virginia Best scored 12 points to help lead the Chargers to a 38-10 win at home over St. Mary's on Wednesday.

Ellen Elmore added six points for WCDS, which improved to 1-3 overall.

The Chargers return to action on Dec. 8 at home against Oakwood.

Middle schools

Eastern Wayne boys 61, Dillard 29 -- Hassan Best collected a game-high 19 points to go along with eight assists and eight steals in the Warriors' season-opening game. Will White contributed 17 points and eight rebounds. Landon Case provided seven points and five assists. Chris Suggs emerged Dillard's top scorer with nine points. Eastern Wayne (1-0) travels to Grantham next Monday.

Norwayne boys 56, Goldsboro 26 -- Tyheim Pitt led three Cobras in double figures with 16 points. Tyler Ruffin added 11 and Sheperd Whitfield chipped in 10. Matthew Woodard paced Goldsboro with nine points. Norwayne (1-0) is the guest of Spring Creek next Monday afternoon.

Grantham girls 30, Rosewood 29 -- Taylor Johnston emerged the Bulldogs' top scorer with 14 points. Teammates Christina Glaspie and Kayla Powell recorded 11 and 10 points, respectively. Grantham (1-0) entertains Eastern Wayne next Monday, while Rosewood (0-1) goes to Mount Olive.

Spring Creek girls 33, Brogden 27 -- Amy Parker sparked the Gators with 11 points in their season-opening victory. Melanique deVeaux and Tajanae Stewart added eight and six points, respectively. Spring Creek (1-0) plays host to Norwayne next Monday afternoon.
