PIKEVILLE -- Four Charles B. Aycock junior varsity wrestlers earned gold medals in a day-long, seven-team meet contested Saturday.

Bryan Diorio, Khiry Reid, Josh Grimes and Jordan Pearson each emerged victorious in their respective weight classes. Overall, 10 Golden Falcon grapplers claimed either first-, second- or third-place honors in round-robin competition.

"Bryan wrestled tough today," said C.B. Aycock head coach Kevin Smith. "He made up for his inexperience with aggressive wrestling, and in doing so, beat some more experienced wrestlers.

"Jordan, Khiry, Josh and Blake (Cooper) wrestled great all day. They looked and handled themselves like experienced wrestlers out there (on the mat)."

Cooper, Ian Lawson, Brandon Bailey and Kevin Carmel each picked up a silver (second place) medal. Teammates Nik Frederick and Andrew Patzer each finished third.

"As expected, nerves and inexperience hurt our kids early, but by mid-day, they were wrestling much better," said Smith. "They needed to get a few matches under their belt before they could settle down and do what they have been taught.

"Once the nerves were gone, they wrestled solidly."

According to Smith, nearly 90 wrestlers participate in no less than three and as many as five individual matches. New Bern, Havelock, West Carteret, West Johnston, Eastern Wayne and Princeton battled along with Aycock.

Smith hopes more teams will put JV wrestlers on the mat for competition throughout the season.

RALEIGH -- Senior Adam Wright pumped in a season-high 36 points as Wayne Country Day rolled past Zion Academy 81-58 on the second day of an invitational tournament at Word of God.

Wright pulled down seven rebounds and dished out five assists for the Chargers, who concluded the two-day event with a 1-1 record. Wayne Country Day carries a 4-2 worksheet into next Tuesday's non-conference contest at Terra Ceia.

Cameron Strickland complemented Wright's effort with 13 points. Travis Davis and Phillip Weeks each added nine, while Lamar Carpenter provided six.

"Carpenter played excellent defense and Cameron shot the ball really well," said WCDS coach Chad Wiggins, whose team continues to play without point guard Tayvon Waters and 6-foot-7 center Jeff Franklin. "I thought Travis played a really good floor game."

The Chargers opened the two-day, eight-team event with an 87-59 loss against Laurinburg Charter on Friday.

Wright and Shadoe Stewart each recorded a double-double. Wright delivered a 19-point, 11-rebound performance. Stewart collected 13 points and 10 rebounds. Weeks emerged the next-highest scorer with seven points.

"They were big, huge, fast and quick," Wiggins said of Laurinburg.

Derrick O'Neil led five Laurinburg players in double figures with 16 points.
