Eastern Wayne's Darryl Cowan hit a 3-pointer from the far right baseline as the buzzer sounded to give the Warriors a thrilling 66-64 win Friday night over visiting Wilson Fike.

It was an exciting conclusion to a night that also the Lady Golden Demons defeat a young, scrappy Lady Warriors team, 52-33.

The Warrior boys jumped out to an early lead with a trio of threes to open the game. Despite six Eastern Wayne turnovers in the first quarter, deadly shooting from the floor and the foul line allowed the Warriors to lead the Golden Demons 13-11 after the opening stanza.

Eastern Wayne increased their lead to 17 with a 24-point outburst in the third quarter -- only to see Wilson Fike storm back and actually take the lead in the last 10 seconds of the game.

"I thought we did the things necessary to win the game early and we hung on in the end," Warriors coach Marvin Bowman said. "I told the team these guys are not going to quit."

The Warriors' big third quarter was led by two 3-point baskets by Cowan and four baskets and eight points by D'Adrian Worrell. Eastern Wayne increased its lead to 19 with six minutes left in the game.

At that point, Fike began a ferocious comeback with full-court pressure and dominance on the boards.

"I thought Fike was very strong inside, I think they wore us down a little at the end," said Bowman.

The Demons big man -- Jonathan Foster -- had 10 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter. Foster cut the Warrior lead to one with a layup with just 50 seconds left in the game.

Still trailing by a point, Fike stole an inbound pass and called timeout with only 13 seconds left. The Demons found Foster wide open again under the basket and Fike took its first lead of the game on Foster's easy basket.

Eastern Wayne quickly brought the ball up court and the Demons deflected a Warrior pass out of bounds with just 1.1 seconds remaining. Eastern Wayne needed a miracle as Coach Bowman set up the final play as the Warriors passed the ball in bounds in front of their own bench.

"The last play was actually a stack play where we send three guys to the corner, Darryl wanted the ball and he is a good shooter," said Bowman

Cowan took the inbounds pass, and with one dribble launched a high arching three. The game-ending horn actually sounded while the ball was in the air. The winning shot triggered a wild celebration by the Eastern Wayne team and fans.

The Warriors finished the game with four players in double figures. Darryl Cowan led the way with 16 points while Lamar Davis and Reco McCarter added 14 and D'Adrian Worrell chipped in with 12. Jonathan Foster and King Farmer had 22 and 17, respectively, for Wilson Fike.

In the girls game, Wilson Fike used a pressing defense the entire game and pulled away in the fourth quarter for the win. The Lady Warriors were only down by 10 after three quarters. The Demons outscored Eastern Wayne by nine in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

"I was real happy with the first half and the way the girls competed, they kept the pressure up in the second half and we did not run our offense well," said Lady Warrior coach Brent Holland.

The Eastern Wayne girls have just one senior on the roster, but Holland refused to use youth as an excuse.

"We will continue to work hard and practice and try to get better," said Holland.

The Lady Warriors were led in scoring by Yasmine Washington with 16 points while the Demons were led by Tramicka James's 15 points.

The Warriors varsity teams travel to South Central High in Winterville on Tuesday night.
