Aycock girls, Cougar boys claim wins

PIKEVILLE -- Monkeys were lifted off the backs of two area basketball programs on Friday night at Charles B. Aycock's gymnasium.

Keyed by an 8-0 run in the third quarter and an 11-2 spurt in the fourth, the Golden Falcons' girls snapped an eight-game losing streak against Goldsboro dating back to the 2001-2002 season with a 45-29 win.

Senior Quaneisha Milner pumped in 13 points, while fellow senior Emily Stewart added 10 for what proved to be a deeper Aycock team.

"We said at halftime we needed a really nice spurt. I thought our execution was much smoother in the second half," said Golden Falcons' girls coach Luke Vail, who is returning to the basketball sideline for the first time since 1999. "They had to challenge themselves to forget the past. You've got to play with intensity and enthusiasm, and I thought we did that."

Senior Chevoya Jackson, the only returning starter on the floor for the Lady Cougars, posted a game-high 16 points for Goldsboro (1-1), which didn't reach double-digit scoring in any quarter.

In the boys game, Goldsboro picked up its first road win over Aycock in coach Randy Jordan's five-year tenure as the his teams' depth and overall athleticism helped the Cougars pull away with a 82-61 victory in front of a packed house at the Falcons' Nest.

All 12 scored that played for Goldsboro, led by 6-foot-6 junior Daquan Joyner's 20 points and fellow junior Tim Kornegay's 18. Eric McLean had three clutch 3-pointers, while Anthony Artis chipped in 9 points off the bench.

"Our depth played a role. We were bigger and stronger inside and I think that helped us a lot," Jordan said. "We've got a lot of weapons up and down the lineup. I'm pleased with how Daquan and Tim stepped up, but Bernie Best played great defense and Eric McLean stepped up and hit some big three's.

"To come up here and win by 20-plus, that's big for this group."

Meanwhile, Aycock had just six players score with senior Rob Phillips (23 points), junior Lamada Williams (17 points) and senior Santavin Poole (12 points) leading the way.

Despite having just six field goals in the first half, the Falcons trailed just 16-13 after the first period and 38-28 at the half as they capitalized on their chances at the line. Sixteen of Aycock's 28 first-half points came from the stripe as it shot 89 percent from the line before intermission.

"That's something we've got to do every game. We practice them a lot during the week," Aycock boys coach David West. "I was proud of the way we knocked those down. That's a part of the game you can improve on every game."

Goldsboro steadily pulled away in the second half.

Joyner found Kornegay with a behind-the-back pass in the post, then McLean drilled a three on the Cougars' next possession to make it 47-32 at the midway point of the third quarter.

Shortly after McLean's three, a fight broke out in the top of the stands behind the Aycock bench. The game was delayed nearly 30 minutes at that point with Aycock Principal Randy Bledsoe announcing over the P.A. system that another altercation would lead school officials to empty the full gymnasium to finish the contest.

Another quarrel erupted in the stands in the same spot late in the fourth quarter. Law enforcement officers ushered the fans out of the facility as a full gymnasium turned unfortunately-empty for the waning minutes.

The third quarter finished with Goldsboro leading 57-41, before the Cougars eventually stretched that advantage to 66-47 late in the fourth quarter amongst the delays.

"It's difficult to play through as a player," Jordan said. "You're up, you're down. You're tight, you're stretched. I was proud of how both teams played through it. They all played with class. I'd like to commend Aycock for how they handled the situation. They made sure everything was under control."

Aycock's girls trailed 8-6 after the first period as both teams struggled from the field and with turnovers in the opening quarter. From there, the Falcons outscored Golsdboro 39-21 with the post play of Stewart and Erin Medford (8 points) seeming to wear down an inexperienced Cougar front court.

"Give Aycock a lot of credit. They really showed us what we needed to work on, especially inside," Goldsboro coach Gladys McClary said. "When we send girls in off the bench, it's like we are getting younger and younger. I found myself teaching a lot on the bench tonight."

McClary, which has taken her team to three-straight N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regional appearances, is hoping to eventually get guard Marquita Graham and center Carmille Early back on the court to increase her teams' depth.

Aycock's teams return to action on Monday at home against Greene Central.

Goldsboro's boys take on East Chapel Hill next Friday at Mount Olive College on first-day action of the MOC Tip-Off Classic. The Lady Cougars do not play again until Nov. 29 when they face Smithfield-Selma at home.
