KINSTON -- Senior Adam Wright collected a double-double -- 30 points, 16 rebounds -- as injury-riddled Wayne Country Day eased past Arendell-Parrott Academy 57-40 on Thursday evening.

Wright also dished out seven assists for the Chargers, who improved to 2-0 heading into next Monday's home game against Word of God.

Wayne Country Day played without starting point guard Tayvon Waters (shoulder) and 6-foot-6 center Jeff Franklin. Waters is expected to sit out for two weeks. Franklin's return is slated for mid-December.

"They were a tough, gritty team," said first-year WCDS coach Chad Wiggins. "The score really didn't indicate how close the game was."

Wright tallied 14 points in the final period to turn an eight-point advantage into the double-digit cushion. Phillip Weeks chipped in 12 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Shadoe Stewart scored just one basket, but pulled down 11 rebounds in Franklin's absence. Travis Davis filled the void left by Waters and "played an absolutely flawless basketball game," according to Wiggins.

"Shadoe battled all over the place," said Wiggins. "He and Travis were the two catalysts. They let everyone know that we might have two plugs in the ship, but we're not going down."

Jeffrey Braswell led Parrott with 10 points.

JACKSONVILLE -- Lamar Davis and Darrell Cowan each pumped in 13 points in Eastern Wayne's season-opening 68-64, non-conference loss at Jacksonville.

"It was a tough game ... an early-season challenge," said Eastern Wayne head coach Marvin Bowman. "Even at the end, it could have gone either way. It's always tough to play Jacksonville, but our kids got after it.

"We just didn't get the 'W'."

D'Adrian Worrell, Reco McCarter and Landon Downes each scored nine points for the Warriors. Worrell contributed seven rebounds, while McCarter blocked four shots.

RALEIGH -- T.J. Sasser provided a team-high 15 points in Faith Christian's season-opening 54-39 victory over Johnston Christian in the Southeastern Invitational contested Thursday.

Southeastern College is hosting the three-day event through Saturday.

Aaron Sladick added 12 points and Taylor Stocks scored nine for the Conquerors.

Jordan Boyette led Johnston Christian with 16.

Faith Christian (1-0) opposes Hilltop Christian of Fuquay-Varina in the semifinals today.

suffers defeat

JACKSONVILLE -- Eastern Wayne's Dionne Smith and Yasmine Washington heated up from three-point range in the second half, but Jacksonville's Martha White proved too tough to handle in the Warriors' 57-44, non-conference loss Thursday evening.

Smith and Washington combined for seven 3-pointers as the Warriors pulled within 41-37 after three quarters. White dominated the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 27 points in the Cardinals' season-opening win.

"We showed a lot of youth and inexperience in the fourth period," said Eastern Wayne coach Brent Holland. "Our girls really played hard and could have easily quit after getting down. Martha was a handful ... a very good player and we didn't have anything for her."

Washington ended the night with 18 points, while Smith and Eboni Reid each tallied nine.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Sophomore Brittani Billups provided a double-double -- 19 points, 16 rebounds -- in Spring Creek's season-opening, 71-46 loss against Holly Ridge Dixon.

Chelesea D'Zurilla led three Bulldogs in double figures with 24 points. Allie Heckart contributed 20, while Nikki Mills chipped in 10.

"We have improved so much since last year, but now we just have to fix the little things," said second-year Spring Creek coach Mandy Ramjford.

Tomeka Pride added seven points and four rebounds.

Spring Creek (0-1) travels to Midway next Tuesday.

JACKSONVILLE -- Darian Cahill and Dwight Ulmer led four players in double figures with 14 points each in Eastern Wayne's 68-65, overtime victory against Jacksonville on Thursday.

Cody Kirkham and Jamere Thomas each scored 11 for the Warriors.
