Outlaw helped '85 Trojans run away with Classic title

Kino Outlaw scored 13 points and pulled down 23 rebounds as Mount Olive defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 83-73 in the championship game of the 30th Pickle Classic in 1995.

The Trojans placed four players in double figures, led by Alfonso Jones with 20 points, Keith Hines with 19 and Brent Jones with 18 points. Transfer Julian Irby narrowly missed his second consecutive double-double with nine points and eight rebounds. Mount Olive shot 55 percent from the field.

The Trojans advanced to the championship game with a 60-56 win over Concordia College in the first round. Alfonso Jones led all scorers with 18 points, while Irby tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds. Outlaw pulled down a game-high 13 boards.

A look at Pembroke

After posting a 3-25 overall record and a 1-15 mark in the Peach Belt Conference in 2004-05, UNC Pembroke head coach JasonTinsley will use last year's experiences as a learning tool to improve his second Braves' squad. With nine players returning, eight of whom saw significant playing time last season, Tinsley is pleased with their performance in preseason camp.

"Having that many guys returning has made a big difference in preseason drills," said Tinsley, who is in his second year at UNCP. "Jabarr (Adams), our only returning senior, has shown great leadership with the new guys on the team."

Leadership is key to the success of the Braves, as the battle for playing time is wide open at every position. Tinsley is hoping that the competition will help improve the team both offensively and defensively

UNCP will likely look to Adams and senior Mark Salazar to be the main scorers. Tinsley hopes Adams' leadership and Salazar's toughness and work ethic will be enough to guide the five freshmen and five transfers.

UNC Pembroke is making its third appearance in the Pickle Classic and first since 2000.
