Jackson leads Goldsboro in season opener

Senior point guard Chevoya Jackson flirted with a triple-double and led four players in double figures with 20 points in Goldsboro's season-opening 71-39 victory over county rival Wayne Country Day on Tuesday evening.

Jackson dished out six assists and grabbed eight rebounds for the Cougars -- a Class 3-A elite eight participant each of the past three seasons.

Keyanna Williams complemented Jackson's effort with 16 points. Janesha May and cross country standout Danielle Irby each contributed 10 points.

Senior guard Tiera Broadie poured in a game-high 27 points to lead the Chargers, of the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference. Mollie Peacock chipped in six points.

Goldsboro (1-0) is the guest of county opponent Charles B. Aycock on Friday. Tip-off is approximately scheduled for 6 p.m.

Wayne Country Day (0-2) travels to Arendell-Parrott Academy on Thursday.

SNOW HILL -- Charles B. Aycock celebrated Luke Vail's return to the girls' basketball scene with a season-opening 55-33, non-conference victory over Greene Central on Tuesday evening.

Vail last coached the Golden Falcons in 1999.

Quanesha Milner buried four 3-pointers and poured in a game-high 23 points for Aycock. Emily Stewart contributed eight points and 10 rebounds, while Erin Medford pulled down a team-high 11 boards.

The Golden Falcons outrebounded the Rams 35-33.

"We were giving away a lot of size, we're more quick than big, but they stepped up really well," Vail said of Stewart and Medford. "The real positive thing is we only had 15 turnovers. For a running team and first game of the season, I thought we played well overall.

"We were a little streaky. The girls played with intensity, hustle and enthusiasm all through the game."

Brianna Stanton paced the Rams with 17 points.

C.B. Aycock (1-0) entertains county rival Goldsboro High on Friday. Greene Central (0-1) plays host to South Central on Thursday.

Michelle Krug and Katie Daniels each scored eight points in Wayne Christian's 36-26 non-conference loss against Albemarle Christian on Tuesday evening.

Brooke Norris and Stacie McCary each tallied five points for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian (0-3) faces Flora MacDonald in the inaugural Wayne Christian Invitational on Friday. Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Clifford Gymnasium.

SNOW HILL -- Santavin Poole recorded a double-double -- 30 points, 13 rebounds -- in C.B. Aycock's season-opening 77-69 victory over Greene Central on Tuesday evening.

The backcourt tandem of Lamada Williams and Rob Phillips turned in a solid all-around game for the Golden Falcons. Williams provided 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Phillips delivered 16 points, seven assists and six steals.

Aycock led by six at halftime and weathered a strong third-quarter effort by the Rams. Greene Central seized a three-point lead after the third period, but couldn't keep the advantage.

"We knew they were going to throw a run at us in the third period," said Golden Falcons coach David West. "They came out and blasted us, so we changed some defensive assignments. We hustled."

Howie Chevalier led the Rams with 20 points.

C.B. Aycock (1-0) entertains Goldsboro at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Greene Central (0-1) plays host to South Central on Thursday.

Mason Chenier, Melvin Shipman and Xander Robinson each prevailed in two events to lead Eastern Wayne to a season-opening victory Tuesday evening in the Goldsboro Y pool.

The trio helped the Warriors pile up 69 points, compared to South Brunswick's 48-point output. Southern Wayne finished third with 38 points, followed by C.B. Aycock (36) and Kinston (24).

Chenier touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly and 100 free style. Shipman emerged the 200 free and 100 backstroke winner. Robinson ruled the 200 individual medley and 500 free.

South Brunswick claimed the girls' portion of the meet with 82 points. The Warriors edged the Golden Falcons 47-46 for second place. The Saints ended up fourth with 31 points, while Kinston scored nine.

Ashley Robins paced Eastern Wayne with victories in the 200 free and 500 free. Rachael Stoneburner claimed the 100 back and finished second in the 200 IM.
