Hyatt scores lone touchdown in North Duplin loss

NORTHWOOD -- North Duplin quarterback Doug Lloyd connected with Sherman Hyatt on a 45-yard touchdown pass late in the first half for the Rebels' lone touchdown in a 41-6 loss at South Stanly in the first round of the Class 1-A (small school) N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.
No. 12 North Duplin, which was sent to the West bracket and traveled over 180 miles, finished the season at 3-7 overall after a 2-3 finish in the Carolina Conference. Fifth-seeded South Stanly (8-4) faces fourth-seeded Swain County (7-4) in the second round.
South Stanly jumped out to a 34-0 lead midway through the second quarter with three rushing touchdowns, one passing touchdowns and one, 45-yard fumble recovery for a score.
The home team finished with 340 total yards, 313 coming on the ground on 44 carries.
Meanwhile, North Duplin posted 233 yards with 124 through the air and 109 on the ground.
North Duplin senior Montreal Garner, who rushed for 786 yards this season, finished his high school career with 57 yards on 16 carries. Garner added four catches for 52 yards. Hyatt had 50 yards on two catches.
Lloyd rushed for 52 on five carries and was 11-for-27 through the air with two interceptions and one touchdown. Only a sophomore, Lloyd completed the year with 1,586 passing yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
