WILSON -- Two familiar Eastern Carolina Conference opponents looking to bounce back after losses to rivals in the final week of the regular season. Clearly, Aycock will need a much better effort out of its offense this week than last Friday against Southern Wayne as limiting mistakes will be key to keep the Bruins' high-powered offense off the field. The Bruins are coming off their first loss of the season after last Friday's defeat to archrival Wilson Hunt. The Golden Falcons suffered a 48-13 loss at Beddingfield just over one month ago.

No. 13 Pasquotank (6-5) at

No. 4 Greene Central (7-4)

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central comes in to the playoffs hot after rolling through the Eastern Plains Conference with a 5-0 record. During that stretch, the Rams' defense yielded only 15 points and posted three shutouts. The Panthers, who have lost three in a row, could be in for a long night if GC's defense continues their tough play. Rams' quarterback Cameron Shelton continues to improve in his first year as a starter.

No. 9 North Lenoir (4-7)

at No. 8 West Stanly (7-4)

OAKBORO -- The Hawks have been up-and-down this year, dropping five-of-six to start the year, then bouncing back to win four in a row. Now, North Lenoir looks to stop a two-game losing skid against a West Stanly squad that has won three straight in dominating fashion in Rocker River 2-A/1-A Conference play. North Lenoir's defense will have to improve after yielding 477 yards to Greene Central last week. The Hawks will be traveling nearly five hours for this first-rounder.

Class 2-A

No. 10 Whiteville (8-2)

at No. 7 Goldsboro (4-7)

Given their records, it may look like the seedings need to be reversed in this matchup, but it's not a typo. By virtue of a higher conference standing, Goldsboro will host Whiteville in the first round. The Cougars blasted North Pitt last Friday and turned in a dominant performance on both sides of the ball. Goldsboro will need more of the same against the Wolfpack, who were 8-0 heading into their final two games before losing two straight. The Cougars must continue to cut down on their penalties in order to hand coach Maurice Jackson his third playoff win.

No. 16 Rosewood (2-8) at

No. 1 Wallace-Rose Hill (11-0)

WALLACE -- Calling this a tall task for Rosewood would be an understatement. The Eagles claimed win number two of 2005 with a victory over archrival Princeton, while the state-ranked Bulldogs were busy wrapping up another Super-Six Conference crown by defeating James Kenan. The Eagles have faced some tough opposition this year both in and out of Carolina Conference play -- hopefully it will have them ready for what will likely be their toughest test of the year.

No. 11 Hampstead Topsail (5-6) at No. 6 James Kenan (8-3)

WARSAW -- Kenan saw its nine-game winning streak snapped last Friday at Wallace-Rose Hill and will be looking to rebound against a Topsail squad coming off of a 26-0 win over Holly Ridge Dixon. The Pirates, of the Coastal Plains Conference, have already made one trip to Duplin County this season when they topped North Duplin 23-17. Despite last week's loss, the Tigers are still outscoring their opposition by nearly 250 points this year.

at No. 5 South Stanly (7-4)

NORWOOD -- The Rebels suffered a hard-fought loss last Friday to Spring Creek and now become one of two teams (joining North Lenoir) in the News-Argus coverage area to make long trips to Stanly County for a first-round game. North Duplin, one of four teams from the east to get sent west, faces another team with "Rebels" as their nickname. South Stanly was 6-1 to start the season, then went 1-3 at the finish in the split Rocky River 1-A/2-A Conference.
