Warriors move on

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne goal-keeper Vincent Hagedorn turned in nine saves to help boost the Warriors to a 2-1 win at Wilson Fike in the second round of the Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs on Saturday.

The victory sends Eastern Wayne (11-6-2) to the eastern regional semifinals as the Warriors will host former Mideastern 4-A Conference rival Jacksonville on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Cardinals (12-7-1), a wild-card team, rallied from a two-goal deficit to top Charles B. Aycock, 3-2, on Saturday in Pikeville.

"The credit for the win has to go to our defense and especially to keeper Vince Hagedorn, who played his best game of the year thus far," Eastern Wayne coach Jörg Wagner said. "He was very strong to the ball and made some crucial saves early in the second half."

The Warriors' Erik Rivera and Andrew Corley had one goal each with Rivera scoring three minutes into the match on an assist from Adam Corley.

"It was good to see that we can start a game and not get into a hole right away. After Rivera's early goal, we found ourselves under a bit of pressure and had to look for counter attacks," Wagner said. "While Fike had most of the possession during the entire match, we were able to, at times, expose them at the back and create some solid scoring chances."

Andrew Corley posted his unnassited goal at the 55-minute mark of the second half.

Fike (14-10-1), which outshot the Warriors 26-14, got its lone goal late in the match when Drew Martin booted home a missed shot by Chandler Bryant.

Class 1-A

Rosewood falls

at Manteo

MANTEO -- Rosewood's Travis Mitchell registered his first goal of the season, scoring in the 30th minute of the second half, as the Eagles suffered an 8-1 loss at Manteo on Saturday in the second round of the Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

The Eagles, who finished second in the Carolina/Tar Roanoke Conference, concluded their season at 9-11 overall. Manteo will host North Johnston, the Carolina/TR champion, this week in third-round action.

"It was an up-and-down season, but I was pround of how we finished," Rosewood coach Daniel Mitchell said. "Anytime you get to the second round, that's an accomplishment. It wasn't how we wanted to end it, but Manteo is a good team."

The Redskins (17-2-3) scored four goals each in the first and second halves.

Kyle Bunn, Trey Kriger, Stephen Tart, Shane Ogburn and Will Smith played in their final soccer games for the Eagles.

Middle schools

Brogden football 38, Greenwood 26 -- Brogden's Jabari Dos Santos rushed for touchdowns of 25 and 30 yards and also returned a kick-off 75 yards for a touchdown. Larenzo Alford added two touchdowns and four, 2-point conversions. Juan Segura, Dos Santos and Gary Woodard paced the Rams' defense. Brogden (6-2 overall) and Greenwood (6-2 overall) each concluded the season at 2-2 in Division I play, good for a second-place tie.
