Trojan spikers dominate Belmont Abbey

BELMONT -- Anna Luft and Sam Mitchell recorded 19 kills apiece and Heidi Busch moved into eighth place on the NCAA II all-time career kills list as Mount Olive defeated Belmont Abbey 30-25, 30-25, 33-35, 30-17 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference volleyball Sunday at Belmont, N.C. The win extends Mount Olive's winning streak to nine and moves the Trojans into a first-place tie with Lees-McRae in the CVAC standings. Mount Olive improves to 24-6 overall and 17-1 in the CVAC.

Busch recorded 16 kills to give her 2,359 for her career and move her ahead of Laura Hall of Indiana (Pa.) (1999-2002). Busch added 16 digs and four blocks.

Sara Christie, who leads the CVAC in assists per game this season, tallied 56 assists to improve her career total to 5,733. Christie ranks 19th on the NCAA II all-time career assists list.

Colby Mangum added 11 kills as Mount Olive placed four players in double figures for the third consecutive match and fifth time in its last eight matches.

Luft, who established her season-high in kills Sunday, also had a team-high five blocks. Mitchell added four blocks for the Trojans, while Nikki Murphy recorded 13 digs.

With the win, Mount Olive matches its longest winning streak of the season thus far. Sunday's match was the Trojans' fifth in the past six days, including three matches in three days.

Mount Olive gets a couple days off before playing host to Pfeiffer Wednesday in the Trojans' home finale. Wednesday's contest marks the final career home match for seniors Busch, Christie and Mangum, who will be honored prior to the match.

Match time is 6:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
