GC defense stays strong

FARMVILLE -- Greene Central's defense limited Farmville Central to 132 yards and five first downs as the Rams remained unbeaten in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference with a 15-6 victory at the Jaguars' stadium on Friday.

Greene Central (6-4, 4-0 EPC) will take on North Lenoir (4-6, 3-1) next Friday in Snow Hill with the conference title on the line. Farmville (4-6, 2-2) travels to Tarboro next Friday.

Justin Tyson finished with six tackles and five sacks on the game to lead the Rams defense, which had eight total sacks. Brandon Sutton had eight tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery, while teammate Curtis Wright added six tackles, one sack and two fumble recoveries. Mario Brown (six tackles, one sack) and Dreyan Willis (five tackles, one interception) also had solid defensive outings for the Greene Central defense.

The Rams have now outscored their EPC opposition 123-6.

The Rams got on the board in the second quarter when Mike Sims ran back a punt 41 yards for a touchdown with 5:16 left in the half.

Just over one minute later, Greene Central quarterback Cameron Shelton found Craig Hodges for a 25-yard score. The conversion attempt failed as the Rams took a 12-0 lead into halftime.

Farmville's lone score, the first allowed by the Rams in EPC play, came late in the third quarter on a 49-yard pass from Brandon Austin to Kajon Farrow.

Greene Central's Ray Dergan pushed the score to its final margin with a 20-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Mario Brown paced the Ram rushing atack with 59 yards on nine carries.
