Wilder snags TD pass, White tallies 2-point conversion in Warrior win
Darius Wilder caught the game-tying touchdown pass in double overtime and David White added the two-point conversion as Eastern Wayne nipped Charles B. Aycock 26-24 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference thriller at Little Big Horn.
White concluded the night with 16 yards rushing and a touchdown, and four pass completions for 62 yards.
Eric Brofft emerged the Warriors' top ball carrier with 115 yards on 15 totes. Orlando Midgett provided 97 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard romp, on just eight attempts.
Nolan Lancaster paced the Eastern Wayne defense with 10 tackes. Anthony Williams collected eight stops and an interception. John Miller and Kevin Fowlkes each recorded six tackles.
The Warriors (6-3, 2-2 ECC) conclude regular-season play next Thursday at Kinston. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Middle schools
Eastern Wayne football d. Norwayne 32-0 -- Eastern Wayne's defense earned its seventh consecutive shutout and a share of the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I championship. Jonathan Midgett returned two interceptions for touchdowns and added three tackles on defense. Will White, Lamar Best and Mac Stover tied for team-high tackle honors with five each. White amassed 200 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Johnathan Carter threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Sadler. Eastern Wayne (7-0) concludes regular-season play at home next Thursday against Rosewood.
Goldsboro football d. Grantham 46-6 -- Teonis Cox rushed for 190 yards and three touchdowns for the Cougars, who remained unbeaten on the WCMSAC Division II scene at 3-0. Freddie Jones added two rushing touchdowns. Cox led the defense with eight tackles and blocked one put. Goldsboro (5-2) is the guest of Spring Creek next Thursday.
Greenwood football d. Rosewood 20-12 -- Chris Barfield and Edward Muldrow accounted for second-half touchdowns in the Bulldogs' come-from-behind victory. Barfield's 45-yard run gave Greenwood a 14-12 lead in the third quarter. Muldrow hauled in a 65-yard pass from Matthew Houston after the T-Birds recovered a fumble. Danny Smith provided Greenwood's first-half TD on a 50-yard run. The T-Birds (6-1, 2-1 WCMSAC Division I) entertain Brogden next Thursday afternoon.
Norwayne volleyball d. Eastern Wayne 25-21, 25-13, 25-15 -- Norwayne finished unbeaten at 14-0 and seized its third consecutive WCMSAC Division I championship. Victoria Benton, Beth Carter and Autumn Pittman emerged the top servers for the Cobras.
Eastern Wayne soccer 4, Norwayne 1 -- Eric Suncin scored two goals, while Leslie Cox and Landon Case each provided one goal. Case and Nick Bowden each recorded an assist. Tyler Ruffin tallied Norwayne's lone goal off Tucker Pearson's assist. Eastern Wayne (10-0-1) concludes play next Thursday at Rosewood. Norwayne (6-1-1) travels to Brogden next Monday.
Brogden football 30, Mount Olive 0 -- Jabari Dos Santos emerged the special teams leader with a 75-yard kickoff return and a 60-yard punt return during the Rams' victory Thursday afternoon. Dos Santos and J.D. Lofton each added rushing touchdowns of 35 and 60 yards, respectively. Juan Segura led the Brogden defense with 10 solo tackles and one fumble recovery. Dos Santos and Gary Woodard each recorded eight stops, while Larenzo Alford collected six tackles and intercepted one pass. Brogden (5-2, 1-2 WCMSAC Division I) concludes its season next Thursday at Greenwood.
Spring Creek volleyball d. Dillard 25-22, 25-11, 25-10 -- Alyssa Potter and Hannah Brown each served two aces for the Gators. Randi Oxendine and Hanna Hall each had one ace. Spring Creek finished 4-10 overall and 2-2 in Division II play.
Dillard football 30, Spring Creek 8 -- Owen Davis rushed for touchdowns of 70 and 30 yards in the Tigers' WCMSAC Division II victory. Braddock Gross added a 60-yard touchdown gallop, while Chris Suggs romped 50 yards for a touchdown. Dillard (3-4) concludes regular-season play next Thursday at Mount Olive.
