MOC loss now a tie

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive's men's soccer match against Lees-McRae, which took place this past Saturday at Trojan Field, has been ruled a 1-1 tie, it was announced Monday by Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Commissioner Alan Patterson. The contest was ruled a suspended match after Lees-McRae no longer had any coaches available on the bench due to red cards.

The match was tied 0-0 when Lees-McRae head coach Chris Whalley was issued a yellow card and then a red card for protesting a call. Mount Olive scored a goal with 51 seconds left in regulation and Lees-McRae scored a goal with 29 seconds remaining to tie the match 1-1 at the end of regulation.

During the intermission, assistant coach Calvin Dixon was approached by the referees about communication between Whalley and the Lees-McRae bench after Whalley had been ejected. Dixon was subsequently issued a red card for "foul, abusive and offensive language," according to the center referee's report.

By NCAA rule, a match is suspended when a team no longer has any administrative personnel available who were listed on the team's official game roster. The center referee allowed the match to continue in the event of an administrative decision. Lees-McRae scored a goal in the fifth minute of overtime, but the goal, as well as all statistics from the overtime period, has been disallowed.

As a result of the tie, Mount Olive's record moves to 11-4-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the CVAC, while Lees-McRae is 8-5-1 and 4-3-1. Mount Olive moves into a tie with Anderson for second place in the conference standings, a game-and-a-half behind Queens, which clinched the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in next week's CVAC Tournament.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Wilson, N.C., to take on Barton in a CVAC match-up. The contest is the regular season finale for both teams. Match time is 3 p.m.
