Michael Lawrence recorded a new course record and Charles B. Aycock's girls prevailed in thrilling fashion in the 2005 Wayne Country Cross Country Championships contested Friday afternoon at Eastern Wayne.

The Warriors' Lawrence ran the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 14 seconds -- the best time recorded by a county runner this season. Lawrence emerged one of four Eastern Wayne competitors to finish in the top 10 and claim a scant 44-45 victory over county archrival Charles B. Aycock in team scoring.

Spring Creek ended up third with 50 points, followed by Southern Wayne with 89. Four Goldsboro runners participated, but did not post a team score.

Class 1-A Carolina Conference champion Eric Walters of Spring Creek finished a distant second in 18:21. Aycock's Dalton Denning claimed third in 18:52. The Gators' Pat Wilkins and Southern Wayne's Allen Bennett rounded out the top five.

The Warrors' Steven Hendricks claimed sixth in 19:10. Alan Toler and teammate Daniel Pennington posted seventh- and eighth-place times, respectively. Eastern Wayne's Paul Wruck and Tim Wright completed the top 10.

Goldsboro's Donald Irby recorded a 27th-place time of 22:46.

Eastern Wayne battled without seniors Matt Interrante and Joey Burridge. Warrior coach Vince Beasley expects them to return for next Tuesday afternoon's Eastern Carolina Conference Championship meet at Wilson Hunt.

C.B. Aycock and Eastern Wayne dueled to a 34-34 tie during the girls' portion of the meet. However, the Golden Falcons had the highest sixth-place finisher and seized the team championship.

The Warriors' Helen Baddour earned individual honors with a time of 21:53. Aycock's Rebekka Katko and Megan Hales captured second and third, respectively.

Eastern Wayne's Lyddia Hirschy secured fourth place in 23:11. Goldsboro's Danielle Irby, a top-five finisher in last week's Eastern Plains 2-A Conference meet, collected a fifth-place time of 23:39.

Rounding out the top 10 were Natalie Taylor (E. Wayne), Angel Roberts (GHS), Danielle Sealey (CBA), Ashley Deal (EW) and Jasmine Dobbin (CBA).

Lanina Dobson ended up 18th overall for Southern Wayne.
