AYDEN -- State-ranked Ayden-Grifton remained in contention for its second consecutive Class 1-A Carolina Conference championship with a 37-6 victory over North Duplin on Friday evening.

The Chargers (8-1) captured their ninth straight conference win, but more importantly stayed tied with state-ranked North Johnston (9-0) atop the standings at 3-0. The teams meet Nov. 4 in Ayden.

"They were tough," said third-year North Duplin coach John Avent.

The Rebels (2-6, 1-2 CC) managed just 157 yards total offense against the Chargers, who remained unbeaten in four home games. Avent's team is 1-3 on the road.

Montreal Garner tallied North Duplin's lone touchdown -- a 6-yard run late in the second quarter. Garner finished with 31 yards on just six totes.

Quarterback Doug Lloyd completed 15 of 21 passes for 111 yards to five receivers. Sherman Hyatt grabbed a team-high five receptions for 40 yards. Demetrius Vann and Garner each caught four. Michael Schilling and Desi Smith each hauled in one pass.

Ayden-Grifton quarterback Richie Turner finished the night 7 for 9 for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Fullback Matt Tripp added two touchdowns on runs of 62 and 9 yards.

North Duplin entertains Rosewood next Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at H.E. Grubbs Field.
