JV football: Goldsboro's Parker notches game-winning TD in OT

A.J. Parker rambled 10 yards for the game-winning touchdown in Goldsboro's 28-20 overtime victory over Farmville Central in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference action Thursday evening.

Farmville Central converted its first possession of the game, but Dustin Uzzardo threw a 69-yard touchdown strike to Curtis Alston for an 8-8 tie.

The score remained deadlocked until the teams combined for four touchdowns in the final quarter. The Jaguars moved ahead 14-8, but the Cougars countered with back-to-back touchdowns.

Uzzardo hit Alston with a 29-yard scoring pass and Iveon Sprangle returned a punt 45 yards for another touchdown. The Cougars led 20-14 until Farmville Central tied the game at 20-20 with 29 seconds remaining in regulation.

Parker broke free on the first play from scrimmage in overtime.

The Cougar defense held on downs to preserve its second win in EPC play.

Demetrius Morgan emerged the top tackler with 10 solo stops and two assists. Parker contributed eight tackles and three assists. Dan Bryant notched five tackles, one assist and one sack.

Deandre Robinson (three assists) and Carlos King each had four tackles. Johnny Artis recovered a fumble and registered three tackles.

Goldsboro (2-6, 2-1 EPC) travels to North Lenoir next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Saints capture

first ECC 3-A win

DUDLEY -- Kelvin Flow rushed for three touchdowns and Kenny Casper added two rushing touchdowns in Southern Wayne's 46-22 victory over Kinston in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday evening.

Flow emerged the game's top ball carrier with 161 yards on 11 attempts, while Casper contributed 106 yards on 10 totes. Louis Santos added one touchdown and 44 yards on five rushes.

Ren Dewitt completed a 59-yard touchdown pass to Alex Aldridge.

Daquan Cozart paced the Saints' defense with eight tackles, a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Aldridge contributed four solo tackles and five assists. Casper added four tackles and three assists.

Daquan Braswell intercepted two Kinston passes.

Southern Wayne (5-3, 1-2 ECC) travels to Wilson Hunt next Thursday.

Hawks clip

Eagles at home

LaGRANGE -- Tyler Smith and Kyle Taylor tallied one goal each in North Lenoir's 2-1 non-conference victory over Rosewood at Bullock Field on Thursday evening.

Justin Carter added an assist for the Hawks.

North Lenoir (8-8-1) entertains Greene Central next Wednesday.

Cougars' Irby

earns second place

BETHEL -- Goldsboro High's Danielle Irby recorded a second-place time of 24 minutes, 38 seconds in the season-ending Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference meet contested at North Pitt on Wednesday afternoon.

Teammate Angel Roberts finished ninth in 27:30, while Erin Coleman claimed 10th in 27:49. The Cougars collected 40 points overall.

On the boys' side, Goldsboro's Donald Irby ended up 20th overall in 22:29. However, the Cougars did not have enough runners for qualify for a team score.

Goldsboro returns to action today in the season-ending Wayne County Meet at Eastern Wayne. The Cougars will participate in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A eastern regionals Oct. 29 at Pittsboro Northwood.

Middle schools

Grantham volleyball d. Dillard 25-10, 25-10, 25-20 -- Alex Thames, Lindsey Mathias and Kristen Cross emerged the Bulldogs' top servers. Thames and Mathias each notched four aces. Grantham (4-7) entertains Greenwood next Monday afternoon.

Norwayne soccer 11, Greenwood 0 -- Tyler Ruffin tallied four goals and one assist for the Cobras, who improved to 6-0-1 overall. Tucker Pearson added two goals and one assist. David Burke, Thomas Oliver, Ryan Bunn, William Tamura, Travis Musselman and Jessica Price each chipped in one goal. Burke dished out a match- and season-high five assists. Norwayne visits Mount Olive next Monday afternoon.

Eastern Wayne football 48, Goldsboro 0 -- Will White collected a team-high 12 tackles and two sacks for the unbeaten Warriors, who earned their sixth consecutive shutout. Jonathan Midgette provided seven tackles, while Dominique Saddler contributed six stops and two sacks. Linwood Grantham, Lamar Best, Mac Stover and Ricky Bell each had six tackles. Best also returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown. Offensively, Midgette rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Grantham, Ryan Jones and Kenyatta Bryant each scored one touchdown. Eastern Wayne (6-0, 2-0 Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I) travels to Norwayne next Thursday afternoon.

Norwayne volleyball d. Greenwood 25-14, 25-17, 25-16 -- The Cobras scored 18 points with Macie Peters on serve. Norwayne (12-0) is the guest of Mount Olive next Monday afternoon.

Spring Creek football 42, Mount Olive 6 -- Josh Lee rushed for two touchdowns, while Anthony Greene hauled in TD passes from Garrett Shiver and Dante Boseman. Joey Combs added a rushing touchdown. Spring Creek (3-3, 2-0 WCMSAC Division II) travels to Dillard next Thursday afternoon.

Greenwood football 22, Norwayne 8 -- The T-Birds tallied 22 unanswered points after yielding a first-quarter touchdown to the Cobras. Chris Barfield closed the gap to 8-6 at halftime with a 6-yard run. Barfield caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Houston and Houston threw a 39-yard TD pass to Tre Thornton in the second half. Danny Smith led Greenwood with 103 yards rushing. Barfield and Wooten emerged the defensive leaders. Greenwood (5-1, 1-1) visits Rosewood next Thursday. Norwayne exited 3-3 overall.

Dillard football 42, Grantham 6 -- Owen Davis rushed for three touchdowns, while Terry Moore recovered a fumble for a touchdown. Lineman Cameron Robinson returned an interception for a touchdown. Chris Suggs added a rushing touchdown. Dillard (2-4, 1-1 WCMSAC Division II) entertains Spring Creek next Thursday afternoon.

Brogden volleyball d. Rosewood 17-25, 25-15, 25-21, 18-25, 15-12 -- Kayla Gracyk led the Rams with 12 aces and three digs. Destiny Core served two aces, while Ashley Narron added one ace. Brogden (7-2) travels to Mount Olive next Thursday afternoon.

Betty Holloway won the "Beat The Golf Course Superintendent" tournament, while Jewel Ivey took low gross and Brooke Eason low net. Frankie Farfour claimed low putts.

Rec football

Rosewood 18, Grantham 6 -- Dee Mabry had three touchdowns for Rosewood, while Kai Jiminez, Jacob Guthrie, Jacob Sasser, Dillon Hinnant, Stanton Head and Tevin Hines paced the defense. Rosewood finished the regular season with a 5-1 record.
