Falcons soccer team wins first-ever conference title

DUDLEY -- Charles B. Aycock's boy's soccer team put the finishing touches on their first-ever conference title with a 9-0 win at Southern Wayne on Wednesday night.

The Golden Falcons (11-6 overall) finished the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference schedule with a 9-1 mark and will be the conference's top seed for the league tourney and the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs. Aycock will have a first-round bye in the ECC tournament, hosted by Eastern Wayne, and will take on the No. 4 vs. No. 5 winner on Monday.

Seeding for the tournament will be decided following Wilson Hunt's make-up game with Kinston today.

On Wednesday, the Falcons got two goals and one assist from Garrett Davis, while Alex Rodriguez added two goals. The scoring duo has now combined for 43 goals and 30 assists on the year.

Rich Holder, Justin Castnati, Justin Hankins, Gavin Forrest and Danny Derwitz contributed one goal each for Aycock.

Southern Wayne (1-11 overall) finished ECC play at 1-9 in the conference and will be either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in the ECC tourney.

Eastern Wayne

bounces back

KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne recovered from an early deficit against Kinston as Eric Rivera tallied a natural hat trick (three straight goals) in the first half to help boost the Warriors to a 5-1 win over the Vikings in their regular season finale.

Eastern Wayne (9-5-2 overall) improved to 7-3 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference and remains one game behind second-place Wilson Hunt, who faces Kinston (1-15, 1-9 ECC) tonight in a make-up contest. The Warriors will host the ECC tournament beginning on Saturday.

After Kinston's Cesar Raya's goal in the fourth minute, Rivera scored three goals in a span of 25 minutes beginning in the 11th minute. Adam Corley and Oscar Suncin added one goal each for the Warriors in the second half.

Andrew Corley dished out two assists for Eastern Wayne, while teammates Dustin Smith and Eric Bourgeois contributed one assist each.

Eastern Wayne outshot the Vikings 23-6 and had six corners to Kinston's one corner.

Hawks pound

North Pitt

BETHEL -- North Lenoir's Alex McGaughy had four goals and one assist as the Hawks defeated North Pitt 11-1 on the road on Wednesday.

Cory Johnson and C.C. Croom added two goals each for North Lenoir (8-8-1, 4-3 Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference), while Israel Huerta, Daniel Mooring and Ricky Jarman added one goal apiece. Tyler Smith and Brian Smith dished out two assists each, while Mooring contributed one assist.

The Hawks host Rosewood in a non-conference game today at home at 7 p.m.

with win

Eastern Wayne's Robbie Keys had one goal and one assist as the Warriors finished off the regular season with a 3-1 win over North Lenoir.

Wes Johnson and Jimmy Larson added one goal each for Eastern Wayne, while Mason Chenier contributed an assist.

Joshua Olmstead had six saves in goal for the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne outshot the Hawks 25-7.

claim Carolina meets

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek's Eric Walters ran a 19:52 and finished off a stellar regular season with his fifth win in as many Class 1-A Carolina Conference matches as the Gators claimed a win at the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park on Wednesday.

Spring Creek finished with 28 points, while North Johnston took second with 49. North Duplin (62) and Princeton (80) rounded out the team scoring.

The Gators also got top-ten finishes from Pat Wilkins (20:03), Alex Casey (20:26) and Daniel Harris (21:22). Clint Bland (20:38) and Michael Mathis (21:13) finished in the top ten for the Rebels, while Philip Croom (20:13) took fourth for the Bulldogs. David Sass (26:32) finished 23rd for Rosewood, which did not qualify for the team scoring.

In the girls meet, North Johnston (28) and Princeton (31) were the only teams that qualified for team scoring.

Princeton's Heather Braswell (22:48) and Courtney Yancey (23:55) finished first and second, respectively, while Maegan Hewett finished fifth for the Bulldogs. Rocio Alvarado (25:55) took seventh for North Duplin, while Stephanie Behrend (28:02) was Rosewood's top runner at 13th.

Spring Creek and Rosewood will participate in the Wayne County meet on Friday afternoon at Eastern Wayne, before the Class 1-A Mideast Regional on Oct. 29 at Heide Trask.

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock had eight of the top 10 runners on Wednesday on its home course against Southern Wayne and emerged with a 20-42 win over the Saints.

Alan Toler (19:38), Travis Reeves (20:06), Trey Benton (20:21), Jesse Fryt (20:27), Daniel Pennington (20:47) and David Williams took spots two-through-seven for Aycock, while Daniel Stancil (21:15) and Thomas Williamson (22:00) finished ninth and 10th.

Southern Wayne's Allen Bennett (19:13) claimed first, while teammate Chase Gardner took eighth with a 21:07.

Both teams will participate in the Wayne County meet on Friday at Eastern Wayne.

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne's Michael Lawrence led three runners in the top five with a 16:23 as the Warrior boys slipped past Wilson Hunt 27-28 at Wilson Beddingfield's course on Tuesday.

Matt Interrante (17:12) and Joey Burridge (17:40) finished third and fifth respectively, while teammates Paul Wruck (18:04) and Stephen Hendricks (18:08) also finished in the top ten.

Beddingfield took third with 83 points.

In the girls meet, Hunt emerged with a 26-32 win over Eastern Wayne.

The Warriors, running without one of their top performers, Natalie Taylor (overextended knee), got three in the top five with Helen Baddour (21:44), Lyddia Hirschy (22:00) and Ashleigh Deal (22:48) taking the two-through-four spots.

Beddingfield did not qualify for the team scoring.
