Saints spikers end loosing streak against Aycock

WILSON -- Southern Wayne's volleyball team broke a long losing streak to Charles B. Aycock Monday in a thrilling, 25-19, 16-25, 11-25, 26-24, 15-11 win in the first round of the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference tournament at Wilson Beddingfield.

The Saints avenged a pair of losses this season to the Golden Falcons, including a three-set setback last week in Dudley.

The Saints, the No. 5 seed in the tourney, move on to face top-seeded Beddingfield today at 7 p.m. in the Bruins' gymnasium. No. 2 seed, Eastern Wayne, battles No. 3 Wilson Hunt in the first semifinal at 5:30 p.m. with a N.C. High School Athletic Association playoff berth on the line. Hunt defeated Kinston in the other first-round contest.

First-year Southern Wayne coach Sally Combs praised the efforts at the net of Charlie Garten and Lindsay Pearsall.

Aycock (10-6 overall) got 15 kills from Kandace Burroughs, eight kills from Shelly Lancaster and six kills from Kristen Paynter.

Faith battles

in road loss

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian's Heather Crumpler had 25 assists in the Conquerors' 25-12, 25-12, 27-29, 18-25, 15-7 loss at Liberty Christian-Fayetteville on Monday.

Elizabeth Clarke added six kills and five assists for Faith (2-10, 1-7), while Natalie Thibeaux contributed three kills.

The Conquerors host Bethel Christian-Kinston today at 4 p.m.

WCDS falls

to Kerr-Vance

Wayne Country Day's Cameron Ford tallied the Chargers lone goal on an assist from Will Futrelle in the 10th minute of the first half as WCDS suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Kerr-Vance on Monday.

The loss drops the Chargers (11-6-1 overall) to 4-4-1 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference heading into today's home game with Ahoskie Ridgecroft. WCDS will learn its N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoff fate on Wednesday.

Kerr-Vance's Brooks Perham scored both of his teams goals with both coming in the first half.

The Chargers were unable to convert a penalty kick with 15 minutes left -- missing a golden opportunity to tie the game.

Hawks suffer

EPC setback

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Tyler Smith and Daniel Mooring tallied one goal each in the Hawks' 7-2 loss at home to Tarboro in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference action.

Alex McGaughy added an assist for the Hawks, who fell to 7-8-1 overall and 3-3 in the EPC heading into Wednesday's match at North Pitt.

Middle schools

Spring Creek volleyball d. Greenwood 25-22, 16-25, 25-6, 12-25, 15-5 -- Spring Creek's Jessie Peterson led her team at the service line, while Hanna Hall, Alex Benton, Mallory Frederick, Randi Oxendine and Hannah Brown were also praised for solid performances for the Gators (3-7 overall). Greenwood (1-7) was led by Taylor Barfield, Natalya Dungee, Samantha Carper, Rebecca Moye, Mary Woods, and Kacie Myers. Greenwood will travel to Norwayne on Monday, while Spring Creek goes to Mount Olive.

Grantham volleyball d. Brogden 25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 25-11 -- Grantham's Alex Thames, Lindsay Mathias and Chelsea Emery paced their team from the service line. Brogden's Qualanda Mathis led the Rams' effort. Grantham (3-6) hosts Norwayne today.

Norwayne volleyball d. Dillard 25-9, 25-11, 25-21 -- Jessica Hare served on 13 points for the Cobras (10-0), who travel to Grantham today.

Rosewood soccer 3, Spring Creek 0 -- Zach Behrend, Spencer Howell and Jeremy Honeycutt scored goals for the Eagles.

Rec. football

Rosewood 13, C.B. Aycock 12 -- Dee Mabry had two touchdowns for Rosewood, while Andrew Henn, Dillon Hinnant and Tevin Hines paced the defense. In an earlier game, Rosewood defeated Eastern Wayne 19-7 with Mabry scoring two touchdowns and Henn scoring once. Rosewood (4-1) hosts Grantham today.
