ND picks up second win, PHS still winless

CALYPSO -- North Duplin sophomore Doug Lloyd threw for a career-high three touchdowns and ran for another Friday night to lead the Rebels to a 34-9 homecoming victory over Princeton at H.E. Grubbs Athletic Field.

Lloyd passed for 211 yards with no interceptions. Two of his scoring passes went to running back Montreal Garner on shovel passes up the middle that covered 48 and 8 yards. Garner scored a third touchdown on a 17-yard run. Lloyd's other scoring toss went to Sherman Hyatt for seven yards.

North Duplin raised its record to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference. Princeton is 0-8, 0-2.

Coach Russ Williamson's Bulldogs got on the board first on Colin Parker's 37-yard field goal on the second play of the second quarter.

The Rebels' first touchdown came at 5:38 of the second period when they moved the ball to the Princeton 17-yard line with the help of a 15-yard run by Garner and a 15-yard pass interference penalty. Then, Garner broke outside right tackle on a 17-yard scoring run and North Duplin had the lead for good.

North Duplin outgained Princeton 363-175 and doubled the Bulldogs in first downs 18-9. But they never established a consistent ground game, averaging 3.9 yards per rush.

Two exchanges after Garner's run put the home team ahead, Rebel linebacker Juan Vaca intercepted a pass in the last minute of the first half -- the only turnover of the game -- and returned it 23 yards to the Princeton 31.

Lloyd hit Desi Smith for 17 yards to the seven-yard line, and on the next play found Hyatt wide open in the right side of the end zone for a touchdown. Lloyd hit Demetrius Vann on the two-point conversion pass for a 15-3 halftime lead.

The Rebels struck again on the sixth play of the second half when Garner took Lloyd's shovel pass 48 yards to make it 21-3.

The Bulldogs answered back with an impressive 69-yard drive in eight plays, with quarterback Patrick Gatewood sneaking three times to cover the final three yards. Scarboro had a 46-yard run to the North Duplin 15, and after a penalty, Gerrell Bogle ran 15 yards to the three-yard line.

The Rebels drove 84 and 64 yards for touchdowns on their next two possessions.

North Duplin tries to stay in the conference race next Friday at Ayden-Grifton (7-1, 2-0). Princeton visits unbeaten North Johnston (8-0, 2-0).
