EW falls to Hunt, 40-6

Wilson Hunt scored 40 unanswered points during the final three quarters and held Eastern Wayne to no yards rushing Friday night as the visitors left Little Big Horn with a 40-6 triumph.

Eastern Wayne (5-3-1) led 6-0 after one quarter of play, but the Warriors were held to a negative-13 yards of total offense during the second and third quarters as Hunt (7-1) dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage.

"Two weeks of no offense -- it's embarrassing," said Eastern Wayne coach Jeff Price, whose squad had just 112 yards of total offense in Monday's 26-10 loss at Southern Wayne and managed only 82 yards against Hunt. "Defensively, we played pretty well, but they were on the field all night, and you can only hold down the fort so long. What did we have, like one or two first downs all night?"

The coach was close, his team finished with four first downs.

The EW defense held Hunt's offense to just 20 yards of offense and no first downs in the first quarter -- and just three first downs in the first half -- but wore down in the second half and gave up 347 yards of total offense.

Eastern Wayne went three-and-out on its first possession, but senior Daniel Bell put a huge hit on Hunt's punt returner, who fumbled the ball to the Warriors' Andrew Bouchard, who scooped up the pigskin and took it back 12 yards for a touchdown.

Special teams, however, haunted Eastern Wayne in the second quarter as a good punt return set up the visitors at the EW 19. Three plays later, Hunt running back Joe Dixon took it in from 12 yards out to give the Wilson team a 7-6 lead.

Eastern Wayne fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, and Hunt made the Warriors pay by going 26 yards in five plays as James Pone scored a 1-yard touchdown to up Hunt's lead to 14-7.

A 43-yard pass play from quarterback Rick Spell to wideout Evan Sebastian set up a 20-yard field goal by Zach Thomas with 22 second left in the half as the visitors took a 17-6 lead into the intermission.

Sebastian was the game's leading receiver with 98 yards on two receptions, hauling in a 55-yard TD catch in the third quarter that upped Hunt's lead to 26-6.

The pass play came just moments after Hunt recorded a safety as the defense swarmed running back Dwight Ulmer in the end zone.

Hunt running backs Ronnie Holder and Calvin Barnes put the game away with fourth-quarter touchdown runs of 9 and 3 yards, respectively.

Hunt finished with 218 yards on the ground with 10 different players getting carries for the visitors. Spell led the way with 56 yards rushing, plus was 5-of-9 passing for 129 yards. For Eastern Wayne, fullback Al Graham had a team-high 10 yards on eight carries before leaving the game with an injury. Andrew Blevins had a team-high 10 carries, but managed just one yard. Through the air, Eastern Wayne quarterback Tyler Ham was 6-of-11 for 82 yards, but 52 of those yards came on the Warriors' final drive of the night.

Eastern Wayne will be back home this Friday as undefeated and state-ranked Beddingfield comes to town.

"It certainly doesn't get any easier," Price said. "But we'll keep battling."
