Rebels end seven-match losing streak

CALYPSO -- North Duplin ended its seven-match losing streak with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 conquest of archrival Spring Creek in their Class 1-A Carolina Conference regular-season finale Thursday afternoon.

The Rebels (7-7) finished 4-6 in conference play heading into next week's tournament. First-round pairings and sites will be announced today.

Senior middle hitter Sierra Ward paced North Duplin with team highs in kills (12), digs (7) and blocks (5). Heather Hudson provided eight kills, two digs, four blocks and one service ace.

Brittany Carr contributed four aces and six digs.

"This was an outstanding game," said Rebels coach Heather Best. "These girls worked hard for this win and fought the whole way. We got down earlier in the season, and tonight shows these girls what they are capable of doing.

"Everyone on this team contributed to tonight's wins and they deserved every bit of it."

Aycock sweeps

Saints in ECC

DUDLEY -- Charles B. Aycock concluded regular-season play with a three-set sweep of Southern Wayne in their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference affair Thursday afternoon.

Jazzmine Lee, Kandace Burroughs and Shelly Lancaster each provided five kills in the Golden Falcons' 25-17, 28-26, 25-19 win.

The Golden Falcons (10-5) ended up in a three-way tie for second place at 6-4 with Eastern Wayne and Wilson Hunt. A drawing to determine seeding for next week's conference tournament was scheduled for 9 o'clock this morning.

"Southern Wayne is a scrappy bunch," said Aycock coach Davis Harris. "Whoever gets them in the first round better not take them lightly."

Beddingfield is hosting the three-day tournament.

falls in NCCSA play

ROCKY MOUNT -- Faith Christian setter Heather Crumpler dished out 10 assists in a 25-9, 25-12, 25-12 loss against Falls Road Baptist in N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A play Thursday evening.

Summer Honeycutt added two blocks and two kills. Jillian Sanders delivered two service aces and two digs. Elizabeth Clarke contributed one ace, one dig and one block.

Brooke Anderson had four digs defensively.

Faith Christian (2-9, 1-6 NCCSA) travels to Liberty Christian-Fayetteville next Monday afternoon.

Spring Creek

earns five-set win

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Tomeka Pride and Brittani Billups pounded out 16 and 15 kills, respectively, as Spring Creek rallied past North Johnston 23-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-5 in their Carolina 1-A Conference match Wednesday afternoon.

Courtney Oxendine and Lorenda Brogden contributed seven and five kills, respectively. Billups and Brogden combined for 15 aces.

Pride recorded a team-high eight blocks.

Spring Creek (10-6, 3-6 CC) concluded regular-season play Thursday afternoon at archrival North Duplin.

KINSTON -- Joveneta Taylor rushed for 104 yards and one touchdown in C.B. Aycock's 14-6 victory over Kinston in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday evening.

Bryant Hill added a touchdown reception from quarterback Steven Strouse, who completed 8 of 13 passes for 115 yards. The Golden Falcons improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the ECC.

Ian Calder emerged the defensive leader with two interceptions.

C.B. Aycock entertains Wilson Hunt next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Cougars gain

first win of year

SNOW HILL -- Darren Pittman returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown in Goldsboro's 20-16 victory over Greene Central in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Thursday evening.

Pittman's touchdown occurred about 45 seconds after Antonio Parker broke loose for a 6-yard touchdown run. That gave the Cougars (1-6, 1-1 EPC) a 14-8 lead.

Both teams each scored a first-quarter touchdown.

Iveon Sprangle, who rushed for a team-high 90 yards, gave Goldsboro a 6-0 lead with his 60-yard run. Pittman ran in the two-point conversion.

Parker added 74 yards on eight totes.

Defensively, Curtis Alston led Goldsboro with eight tackles. Hyonte Atkinson and Dan Bryant each had seven stops. Carlos King and Johny Artis each recorded five tackles.

The Cougars play host to Farmville Central next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Conquerors drop

NCCSA road game

ROCKY MOUNT -- Faith Christian rallied with three second-half goals, but time wasn't its ally Thursday afternoon at N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A rival Falls Road Baptist.

The homestanding Crusaders held on for a 5-4 win, which dropped the Conquerors (6-4) to 3-3 in conference play.

Jason Bone started the second-half surge with a goal off Charlie Sugg's assist. Freddy Ignot and Stephen Marshall each followed with an unassisted goal.

Ignot scored in the first half off Bone's assist.

Faith Christian is the guest of Liberty Christian-Fayetteville next Monday afternoon.

dealt ECC defeat

PIKEVILLE -- Wilson Hunt collected two quick goals in the first 12 minutes and cruised past Charles B. Aycock 6-2 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action Wednesday evening.

The Golden Falcons' Alex Rodriguez whittled the deficit to 2-1 with an unassisted goal in the 25th minute. Hunt senior Jerimy Lucas and junior Jason Lucas answered with back-to-back goals to give the Warriors a 4-1 lead at halftime.

Rodriguez recorded his second goal 10 minutes into the second half.

Hunt (12-5-1, 5-2 ECC) handed Aycock (9-6) its first league loss in eight outings.

Chargers clip

Eagles' wings

AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton erupted for three first-half goals in a 12-minute span and held on to defeat Rosewood 3-2 in a Carolina/Tar-Roanoke 1-A Conference match Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles rallied for two second-half goals. Trey Kriger scored an unassisted mark in the 49th minute. Goss Kendall concluded Rosewood's scoring in the 73rd minute off Elliott Lee's assist.

Trey Baggett notched two goals and Jordan Evans contributed one for the Chargers.

"We had plenty of opportunities to get things done, but we played poorly," said Rosewood coach Daniel Mitchell. "A deserving team won."

Rosewood (5-8, 2-3 C/TR-C) visits Hobbton next Monday.

Warrior boys take

top four spots

Eastern Wayne runners captured the top four places in a three-team, non-conference meet Wednesday afternoon in New Hope.

Michael Lawrence ran the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 22 seconds to help the Warriors deal Wilson Beddingfield a 15-48 loss. County rival Wayne Christian had several individual runners, but not enough to post a team score.

Matt Interrante finished second behind Lawrence in 18:46. Teammates Joey Burridge and Paul Wruck ended up third and fourth, respectively, in 19:25 and 19:29.

Wayne Christian's Doug Johnson ended up fifth in 19:32.

Eastern Wayne's Natalie Taylor emerged the top runner in the girls' portion of the meet with a time of 22:38. The Warriors won the three-team event outright since neither Beddingfield or Wayne Christian fielded a full team (five runners).

Helen Baddour ended up second in 22:40, followed by Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price (23:17). The Warriors' Lyddia Hirschy and Ashleigh Deal rounded out the top five.

Eastern Wayne returns to action Saturday at Tanglewood Park in Winston-Salem. The Warriors' next Eastern Carolina 3-A meet is scheduled for Tuesday at Hunt with Beddingfield.

PRINCETON -- Spring Creek's Eric Walters and Princeton's Heather Braswell each claimed individual victories in Wednesday afternoon's Carolina 1-A Conference meet.

Walters recorded a meet-winning time of 19 minutes, 3 seconds. Teammates Pat Wilkens (fourth), Daniel Harris (eighth), Daniel Correll (10th) and Ryan Kelly (18th) helped the Gators take the overall team victory.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs' Braswell ran the 3.1-mile course in 22:20. She was followed to the line by teammates Courtney Yancey, Olivia Booker and Maegan Hewitt. Britney Stewart turned in a seventh-place time to complete Princeton's scoring.

All the teams return to action next Wednesday in the season-ending Carolina Conference Championship meet. The site has not been announced.

SNOW HILL -- Goldsboro High's Danielle Irby seized the top girls' spot in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference meet Wednesday afternoon at Greene Central.

Irby finished the 3.1-mile course in 23 minutes, 21 seconds. Fellow Cougars Angel Roberts (third), Erin Coleman (fourth), Roxanne Deal (sixth) and Tamika Adams (seventh) helped contribute to the outright win.

Ashley Oakes led Greene Central with a second-place time of 23:56.

The Rams' Tony Tyson grabbed the top spot in the boys' meet in 18:29. Lance Murray, Andrew Jarman and Chris Nethercutt followed Tyson to the finish line.

Donald Irby took fifth overall for Goldsboro.

Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett, Courtney Barnes, Ashley Kemp and Kara Kelly each claimed a pro-set (eight-game) victory in singles.

Quinn-Lauren Pierce and Margaret Connelly-Jessica Davis each picked up a doubles win.

Carolina title run

CALYPSO -- Kayla Myers, Heather Hudson and Jessica Pridgen each provided three kills in North Duplin's 25-19, 25-18 victory over Spring Creek in the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams Thursday afternoon.

The Rebels concluded the year 14-0 with a 10-0 Carolina worksheet.

"I am extremely proud of these girls," said North Duplin coach Heather Best. "They really worked hard all season long and they earned this championship title."

Myers added three digs and one service ace in the straight-set win. Vanessa Lynch handed out three assists to go along with a team-high four aces and one kill.

Erica Lane contributed two kills, three digs and one ace.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Visiting North Johnston dropped the opening set, but rallied for a 16-25, 25-19, 26-24 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek on Wednesday afternoon.

Kristin Smith led the Gators with six kills.

Brandi Simpkins served six aces, while Shaquita Brooks contributed three.

Spring Creek (8-6) fell to 5-4 in the league.

Middle schools

Goldsboro football 16, Dillard 8 -- Teonis Cox tallied the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Matthew Wood threw a touchdown pass to Tyquan Singleton. Cox and Sholando McBride emerged the defensive leaders for Goldsboro, now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I play. The Cougars travel to Eastern Wayne next Thursday afternoon.

Norwayne volleyball d. Brogden 25-10, 25-16, 25-20 -- Victoria Benton, Megan Wunders and Beth Carter emerged the serving leaders for the unbeaten Cobras. Norwayne (9-0) visits Dillard next Monday afternoon.

Spring Creek football 26, Rosewood 14 -- Josh Lee and Joey Combs each rushed for 100 yards, while Lee collected two touchdowns. Garrett Shiver completed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Greene. Combs, Shiver, Hunter Newsome, Dontay Boseman, Noah Hinson, Raul Fuentes and Eddie Soto played well on defense. Spring Creek (2-3, 2-0 WCMSAC Division II) entertains Mount Olive next Thursday afternoon.

Norwayne football 20, Brogden 14 -- Deven Sanders scampered 40 yards for a touchdown and Isaac Ryalls added a 15-yard touchdown run for the Cobras. David Gurganus threw a 35-yard TD pass to Ryan Godwin. Tyheim Pitt led the defense with 11 tackles. Other defensive standouts were Ryan Godwin, Phillip Godwin, Antonio Dunston and Marcus Cobb. Norwayne (3-2, 2-0 WCMSAC Division II) is the guest of Greenwood next Thursday afternoon.
